red

REDs FrankRED is called an action comedy and stars Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban & Morgan Freeman.

RED (Retried & Extremely Dangerous) is written by Jon & Erich Hoeber (Whiteout) and directed by Robert Schwentke (The Time Traverler’s Wife).

The movie starts out watching Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) going through his daily, boring routine. You can feel the doldrums dripping from his routine, but it is what he does.  And how boring it must be, seeing as how he’s a retired black-ops agent. Retired? Sorry, no one retires from black-ops, just goes dark and off-mission.

But his life is so boring that he tears up his retirement checks and calls the company to be able to talk to a certain operator… Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker). They’ve developed a sort of relationship from all their phone conversations.

RED (Retired & Extremely Dangerous) promo art

RED, (Retired & Extremely Dangerous) starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren & John Malkovich.  Frank (Bruce Willis), Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich) and Victoria (Helen Mirren) all former black ops secret agents, have just found themselves on the most wanted list of the CIA’s for the things they know.

After being framed, they come back together to not only survive, but to break into the top-secret CIA headquarters, looking to uncover one of the biggest conspiracies ever.

RED is opening October 15th in theaters nationwide, but I already know a few tidbits of the characters background.  This due to the generosity of WildStorm/DC Comics as they sent me copies of the prequels to check out.

REDs Frank

What’s surprising is that the comic is rather true to the nature of the life of a spy with just right dab of gore to remind you it’s not just a comic, it’s a prequel to a spy movie.  The prequels cover a moment from their younger pasts.  We see Frank doing what he needs to do after a job gets done.  We discover that Victoria breaks one of the golden rules of the spy industry. And I think, from what I’ve seen of Marvin, we’re in for a bit of a surprise, if the prequel holds true for the movie!  Joe, is just a very focused, calm professional.

Syfy ChannelThe Syfy Channel unleashes Red: Werewolf Hunter & Monsterwolf!  October is the month of Halloween (technically) and what better network than the Syfy Channel with their huge inventory of Saturday Night flicks and new Saturday Original Movies can go nuts with scary monster movies?  OK, there are a few that go all out, but still, with enough popcorn and time, you have to admit the B-movie fare from Syfy can be entertaining!

With that said, the NBC owned Syfy Channel is coming at us with two Saturday Original movies for what they call a “howling good time.”

MONSTERWOLF -- Syfy Original Movie

The first movie of note is called Monsterwolf, premiering on Saturday, October 9th and stars Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe) and Jason London.  In Monsterwolf, an evil oil company disregards rules against drilling on tribal land and their own deeds unleash a nasty, protective animal spirit, called the Kachinawaya.

Felicia Day in Syfy TV Movie RED

We’ve been waiting, and waiting, and finally, just short of 30 days away, the Syfy Channel announced the air date for Red, starring Felicia Day, will air on October 30th, 2010.  Along with Felicia Day, stars Kavan Smith (Eureka, Stargate Atlantis) and Stephen McHattie (2012, Watchmen).  It’s directed by Sheldon Wilson (Screamers: The Hunting, Mothman) and is written by Brook Durham (Merlin and the Book of Beasts, writer of the upcoming Emilie Ullerup starrer, Witchslayer.)

Red is about the descendant of Little Red Riding Hood, whose lineage has become werewolf hunters.  (I guess they have an axe to grind after the wolf gobbled up the little red hood!

Karl Urban in Chronicles of Riddick

It’s been reported in Empire Magazine that Karl Urban will be playing the main role of Judge Dredd in the upcoming, newest remake (or re-imagination) of the classic comic.

In the article, the producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, made note that this version of Judge Dredd will be “a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity.“  They also noted that in this movie, Judge Dredd is NOT taking off his helmet.

-

For me, I didn’t think there would be too many actors that appealed to my sense of who could visually look the part for Judge Dredd. I think when Stallone played Dredd, he did set a precedence for the steely jawed look of the cop / judge of the streets.

This could be fun. I enjoyed Karl Urban in many of his roles, one of them, when he played Vaako in The Chronicles of Riddick, was when I first took notice.

The Guild with and from Felicia Day

Felicia Day and cast are back for the 4th season (already in progress) of The Guild. If you’re saying huh? 4th what? It’s an extremely popular web series by Felicia Day that follows some players of an online game that is like World of Warcraft.

To announce/talk about the 4th season of The Guild, they’ve created a music video to kick it off in style! It’s referred to as a Bollywood-themed vid, but, well, sort of. I’ve seen some good Bollywood and this is just a fun reference to it.

Felecia if rocking these days!  Dark Horse Comics has a comic for The Guild, Felicia Day is headed to Eureka on the Syfy Channel, and Felicia Day will be in an upcoming Syfy movie called RED, where she’s a werewolf hunter.  Busy girl and I’m glad to see that!

Check out the Bollywood-themed Guild video after the break  (PS:  Did I mention Wil Wheaton was in season 3 of The Guild? Just sayin’!:

2010 Comic-Con News from Cinema Static

The 2010 Comic-Con event in San Diego is coming at us pretty fast.  Plans are set, travel itineraries cemented and the anticipation of little sleep, survival rations and Kindle books (Amazon: Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G, 6) are at the ready.  I suggest books because if you head off to Hall H, the lines can sometimes be pretty long!  In fact, very long.  One year, it wrapped out the door, around the south end of the building to the west side of the convention center, and then all the way back across the back of the entire convention center, W of the hotels down the walk path, and down the bay for a little bit longer.  I am not sh**ing you!  Bring books, extra phone batteries, or lots of cards to play games with.
