"Comic Con" News

The upcoming 2011 San Diego Comic Con, which takes place starting July 20th and running through July 24th is a bit of a game changer this year.  For one, a few movie studios said they weren’t’ showing up this year.  I want to emphasize that they “said” they  weren’t.  I keep hearing rumors to the contrary but I’m not saying anything until I see the actual news or press releases concerning surprise appearances!  To some extent, I get it though.  Studios can dump a huge amount of money into marketing the Comic Con event and then the movies crash and burn, comparatively speaking.

Or maybe the wrong movies were viral marketed.  Who knows.  But for now, what the absence of some studios means is that Hall H is now open for other venues of entertainment, such as television productions.  Now TV studios can get a hand-hold on that huge 5,000 seat auditorium and pack in the TV crowd, or, maybe there might be just a little bit more room to sit than Ballroom 20 used to afford.

With that said, looking over the 4-day schedule of Comic Con‘s two most infamous rooms, I see some sneak peek pilot airings, I see popular TV series, some movies from Sony, 20th Century Fox, DC Entertainment, Paramount Entertainment, Relativity Media and much more.

Director/Execituve Producer Jon Favreau arrives at the world wide premiere of "Iron Man 2" Premiere held at the El Capitan Theatre

For personalities, there are a few scheduled for the big rooms:  Jon Favreau, Guillermo del Toro, Francis Ford Coppola, Dan Deacon and the ever verbally colorful Kevin Smith!  I would always recommend catching Jon Favreau when he speaks.  I have never walked away from any event with him in it and not learned some incredible inside perspective on the industry when he talks.  He’s like ‘the people’s director’ and fills us in!  He talks to the crowds and entertains.  It’s great and I look forward to catching what he has to say!

And most panel Q&A’s will have major talent attending.

So check out the Comic Con sched below for these two huge rooms and tell me what you think you’d like to catch!  Me, I need to clone myself because I have no ‘Agents of Cinema Static‘ (that are going) and there are good things in both rooms on all days.  Also for more details, see the site itself for more, much, much more on details.

"Comic Con" Updates, News & Schedules from Cinema Static

I was trying to filter through all my press releases but while I was trying to edit the **** out of it all, Comic Con released their 2011 schedule for Wednesday, July 20 and Thursday, July 21.

If you’re headed to the Comic Con, you can also hit up the Comic Con website for all the information you could use.

What’s going to be a bit different this year is that with some movie studios deciding not to waste their money on marketing at Comic Con, they’ve decided upon alternate and more than likely, more cost-efficient means of marketing their materials.  What this means is that now, where Hall H used to be reserved for only movies, will now be getting some TV shows.  And something else I’ve noticed is that the hot shows are no longer just relegated to Sunday in Ballroom 20!

That will be nice to have the extra space!  Ballroom 20 is great, but Hall H is greater!!!

With that in mind, below is the “Condensed by Bruce” version of the schedule.  It’s terse and to the point.   If you want to know more you can either hit up the Comic Con Wed/Thur Schedule page or leave a comment/question here and I’ll dig up the info for you!

It looks like Wednesday and Thursday are focused on TV series.  Without further adieu…

New Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray

With over 175 new DVD & Blu-ray releases coming to market on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011, the more popular titles included in this horde are The Green Hornet, The Dilemma the fifth season of Boy Meets World, the third season of BBC’s Being Human.

Something I noticed as being listed as coming to Blu-ray this week is the ever spectacular, well, at least totally entertaining 1996 film from Robert Rodriguez and Dimension Films, From Dusk Till Dawn.  Back when vampires weren’t the trending subject, Rodriguez took us on an awesome ride with George Clooney to a bar in the desert, and oh, what a bar!  In From Dusk Till Dawn, there’s the family that gets…  is played by Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, & Ernest Liu.  The brothers that start all the trouble are, George Clooney & Quentin Tarantino.  We also get an ‘eye full’ of Salma Hayek, Cheech Marin & Danny Trejo.  It is a fun ride of a movie… that is for sure!  And now in Blu-ray!?  That’s awesome!

Also on Blu-ray, is a great classic called Taps.  This movie is about military cadets who feel like they have to take extreme measures to insure the future of their academy when its existence is threatened by local condo developers.  It stars George C. Scott, Timothy Hutton, Ronny Cox, Sean Penn & Tom Cruise.

Also check out the TV, Kids and ‘Other’ sections for some new titles coming out this week!

Everything below is available at Amazon for purchase or can be watcehd via Amazon Instant Video!

Babes of Comic Con 2010 Machete Girls

Babes of Comic Con 2010 - Machete Girls

Over the months I’ve been seeing a lot of angst, politically and racially about the plot of Robert Rodriguez‘s movie Machete.  It’s been questioned if it advocates race wars, or if it’s mexploitation or what have you.  You might as well start griping about French films that hire French actors like Delphine Chaneac while you’re at it, or any film depicting a male committing violence… or female induced ass-kicking.  WTH is the point of this focus on Machete?  Maybe it’s just an easy target to latch onto with it’s recent media surge.

Machete is a movie that started out as a fake movie trailer in the 2007 shed-blood movie Grindhouse and there was enough interest in it to move forward with a real movie. That means people were interested in seeing it and all Robert Rodriguez did is go with it.  In so doing, he hired people to fill the roles that he extrapolated from his fake trailer.  People he knows who could do the job.

Real Steel w Hugh Jackman

"Real Steel" starring Hugh Jackman

It looks like Robert Rodriguez will probably not be directing the Wolverine spinoff, Deadpool for 20th Century Fox.  He’s going to be busy with working on “Spy Kids 4″ and he’d only be able to work on “Deadpool” if the studio were able to push back their time schedule.

Meanwhile, speaking of Wolverine, “X-Men: Wolverine 2,” 20th Century Fox is reportedly looking at 2 potential directors.  David Slade and Darren Aronofsky.  The industry money is on David Slade, being that he just came off of directing a big tent-pole movie, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.”

And since we’re on the subject of Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is busy filming the movie “Real Steel” for Dreamworks Studios.  “Real Steel” film synopsis:

Opening Movies from Cinema Static Logo

This week we have The American with George Clooney, opening on Wednesday, Sept 1st and then Robert Rodriguez’s Machete and Going the Distance will follow up, opening on Friday, Sept 3rd.  But first, here’s a quick box office report from last weekend.

Last Weekend’s (8-27) Box Office Performers

Box Office Numbers from Cinema StaticEli Roth’s The Last Exorcism took the top cash drawer for the weekend, pulling in $21M in over 2800 theaters.

Takers took the 2nd spot with a 2200 theater weekend, and The Expendables hung on to the 3rd spot, bringing in $9.5M in 3398 theaters.

Technically, though Takers was 2nd in totals, it averaged more per theater ($9519) than the other movies.  In my book, that made it the better performer!

The re-release of Avatar netted it another $4M in their coffers, making that off of a 812 theater showing.

Title Weekend Gross
The Last Exorcism $21.3M $21.3M
Takers $21M $21M
The Expendables $9.5M $82M
Eat Pray Love $7M $60.7M
The Other Guys $6.6M $99.3M
Vampires Suck $5.3M $27.9M
Inception $5.11M $271M
Nanny McPhee Returns $4.74M $17M
The Switch $4.66M $16.5M
Piranha $4.31M $18.3M
Avatar re-release $4M $753M

Opening Movies for “Friday”

The American will be opening Wednesday, September 1st in theaters. It stars George Clooney & Irina Björklund. George plays an assassin who is hiding out in Italy for one last assignment.

It directed by Anton Corbin (Control) and the screenplay is written by Rowan Joffe (28 Weeks Later).

The director makes me nervous but Joffe has a nice movie under his belt. Add that to Clooney in the mix and this could be a good time at the theater.

DeadpoolIt’s being reported that Robert Rodriguez is in talks to take the director’s chair for the upcoming Marvel Entertainment movie, X-Men spinoff, Deadpool!  But will Rodriguez take up the mantle of director for Deadpool?  He’s obviously a great action director.  But right now, his slate seems awful full with Spy Kids 4, Sin City 2 and then Deadpool?

Do you know why I’m hoping for a Rodriguez directed Deadpool?  Then maybe we can get more Danny Trejo!  I can’t get enough of Danny Trejo’s characters.  They’re all fun and entertaining!
