rule changes

Bruce's NASCAR Bits and Pieces Logo

As we await the massive number of possible announcements from NASCAR in the coming week, we know that some of these announcements concern rule changes.  I’ve just come across a fascinating premise of a potential rule change that deals with setting the qualifying order by how the teams practice speeds stack up from the practice session just prior to qualifying.

It sounds fascinating, but I think there are a few snags with the premise…  let’s check it out:

The premise behind practice speeds setting qualifying order is that NASCAR will then have the faster drivers qualify at the end of the qualifying session.  The idea is that this might make for a more dramatic qual session and all the fast drivers/teams will be on the same qualifying conditions.

Budweiser Shootout at DaytonaBudweiser Shootout

-

After all the rule changes and such regarding eligibility for entry into NASCAR’s Budweiser Shootout for 2011, we finally have a list of drivers that survived the new qualifications.

The Qualifications for the Shootout:

  • The 2010 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers
  • Past Cup Series champs
  • Past Budweiser Shootout champs
  • Past Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 champs
  • Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year drivers from 2001-2010

-

After all that was said and done and the field filtered through, we have our 30 drivers.  After looking through this list despite the respect paid to past achievements, in the real world it does not matter what you have done… no matter how significant.  It’s more about what you are doing right now.  With that in mind, I think there are a few drivers that just don’t belong in this field, and I don’t mean any disrespect to them.  What I do recognize is a complement of drivers that will, or could, draw in fans that range from new fans to older fans of the sport.

NASCAR Bits & Pieces NB&P Mini Logo - cleaner

UPDATED 2/11/10:

It’s official gang!  NASCAR has mandated that now under the green-white-checkered race finishes, we will have 3 attempts to finish a race before they call it under yellow.

I’ve quietly applauded the GWC efforts last year as it extended the number of finishes under green, for sure.  And yet, despite the GWC, we still did have a few yellow flag finishes.

Then again, some tracks this just might be overkill, for sure.

Regardless, this will definitely extend the possibility of having green flag finishes….   or generate more sheet metal for me to buy off of eBay from the shops.  Either way, I see it as a good thing for the sport and the fans of the sport.

NASCAR announced a few new rules for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for 2010.

The trucks will have double file restarts.  It’s worked well since its inception in the NASCAR system and I look forward to it in the Truck Series.

Teams can have 6 men over the wall.   (At present, it’s 5.)

They’ve also added the rule that teams can now change tires AND add fuel in the same pit stop.

These changes have been quoted as to have money saving effects.  Not sure how that works, but I’m not the expert here, so I will take their word on it!

What confuses me is why NASCAR is making a new rule for 2010 about the pitstops.  They seem to make it sound as if they’re adding something new when they’re just rescinding their latest modification to the pit stop rule.  I wonder why they just can’t say we goofed, and let the system go back to the way it was now?

Well, regardless, those are some of the newest rules coming at us for 2010 in the NASCAR Truck Series.

nascar camping world truck series

So I was looking over some old posts from my last place and I came across a post that was talking about the “new” rules for 2009.

The race day performance impacting rules are:

* Teams will be limited to only five men over the wall.
* Pit crews will not be able to change tires and gas up during the same pit stop.
