The Howard Stern Show Contract Bits

-

The Howard Stern Show only has a few episodes left on Sirius XM Radio until his last scheduled episode on December 17th and according to my sources in the mix, they’re still negotiating.

They’ve never gone this long in a negotiation session and one has to worry about the chances of The Howard Stern Show surviving.  Or do we?

When Howard Stern went to Sirius, he drew a few million subscribers with him.  For Sirius, that was a pretty big move for them.  Though in truth, it was a mere shadow of numbers that Howard was getting on terrestrial radio.  The odd part of Howard moving to satellite radio was that the comedy  schtick that used the annoy and keep me away from the terrestrial broadcasts minimized and he started having solid interviews and sound-byte time with his celebrity friends who come by his studio.  To be honest, if you ever get past the early image conceptions we all have of him from his terrestrial radio days, he’s a very forthcoming, honest and smart man and despite his self-proclaimed issues, he bares all when talking about himself and his opinions.  A rather refreshing take considering the state of Hollywood and the world of spin-masters these days.

He’s proven to be a very insightful and a smart movie reviewer when he would announce his opinions of movies he’s seen (He likes the action / superhero /sci fi genre) and as you would guess, he sometimes does let loose with his language because he can on satellite, but it isn’t as rampant as one would think it would have been.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Fox has $38 million to spend on the next Judge on American Idol, and that it won’t be Howard Stern.

Anyone who listens to Howard Stern knew that from day one that he was saying it ain’t something he was looking to do.  He’s looking at another TV deal, but no details have come to light on that one.  Now that, he’s mum about.

As it stands, it is said that the new judge will be announced at the end of this season.

Me, I don’t care how many seasons Fox has signed up for, once Simon leaves, I think the show is over, or will quietly fade.

I noticed this week while listening to my SIRIUS Satellite radio, channel 128 NASCAR channel that I started getting general sports recaps at the top of the hour.

My first perspective was not a very printable one, being as how sometimes I just don’t have that much time when I turn my SIRIUS Satellite on and I want to hear something of what they’re chatting about in the NASCAR world.

This morning on The Morning Drive, they addressed the issue to some degree and their explanation almost soothed my ruffled feathers.  Almost.

Howard Stern on SIRIUS Satellite RadioSomehow, the idea of Howard Stern taking over for Simon Cowell on American Idol has taken on a life of it’s own.

It’s being reported that Ellen DeGeneres is not enthusiastic about Howard on the judging panel, but if you’re a Howard Stern listener, “Hey Now,” you know he really hasn’t said anything serious about the situation.  At least that’s according to one listening source of mine.

The timing with his SIRIUS Satellite contract being up this year combined with Simon Cowell leaving the show have just come together perfectly to fan the flames nicely.

Howard makes what, $500 mil on his contract?  While the Huffington Post reported back in mid-2009 that Simon was offered over $100 million a year to stay on.

This morning I was listening to the guys (Nate Ryan & Pete Pistone) on SIRIUS XM 128, and they’ve been doing an awesome job in talking to the media / reporters and such who were let go due to the NASCAR Scene & SceneDaily closing / absorption.

This morning Jeff Gluck was on the radio with the morning boys.  (Above image is Jeff having fun with John Daly of The Daly Planet.)

First, Jeff’s voice is a very youthful.  I never gave it much thought.  When you read someone’s words, your own vision or version of a voice infiltrates your perception.  Odd how that is, at least for myself here on NASCAR Bits & Pieces.

Jeff has a great sense of abstract humor about his present situation as he reflected on getting a job with a magazine, thinking how working with a magazine that has a subscriber base is a good job to have.  He then made note about Twitter and how it affected the industry.

I’ve always wondered why we can’t get SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Channel 128 NASCAR channel on the Internet?  We seem to have access to many other offerings from SIRIUS on their web interface.  What’s up?

Dave Moody fielded a phone call today about that very subject.

Basically put, Turner Broadcasting owns the NASCAR rights.  What Turner wants for $$ to stream the NASCAR content on the internet is apparently much more costly than what SIRIUS considers the value of the content to be worth.

What this seems to mean is that until either the debt ridden Satellite entity finds the money (not likely) or Turner decides to lossen up their premise of what the value is, we, the consumer / fan are victim to this stand-off.

So we all know that America’s Funniest Video’s apparently is more important than the last few laps of a hotly contested NASCAR race in the middle of a heated championship battle.

I want to take a quick look back at something I wrote in November of 2008 regarding Dave Moody from SIRIUS Satellite after that Phoenix network snafu:
