spin-off

Below are my Comic Con panel terse recaps for Torchwood, Eureka, Warehouse 13 & True Blood.

"Comic Con" News

-

Torchwood

In the Torchwood panel at Comic Con, the panel consisted of John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman, Alexa Havins and writer Jane Espenson.

The panel had a bunch of levity and was a nice experience of laughter. But to look at the specific points made in the panel about the show:

Espenson said things will be getting darker as the Torchwood: Miracle Day progresses.

Espenson wants the fans to really embrace the theme of this season and look at the bigger picture of the effects from Miracle Day.

No word on renewal yet.

Eureka

The Comic Con Eureka panel guests included cast members Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Neil Grayston and Felicia Day. Also on-panle were executive producers Jamie Paglia and Bruce Miller. The panel was moderated by Wil Wheaton.

They chatted about Eureka‘s new space program, a love triangle and the animated Christmas special coming up.

Here, they chatted about things like how Day found it easy to fit into the cast.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield will be directing the episode titled “Omega Girls.”

And this year’s Christmas episode will be an animated ‘sode, with multiple styles of animation.

Other than that, it was just a fun experience…especially when the entire audience sang happy birthday to Colin Ferguson. (Yes, they said it was his birthday.)

Oh, on that love-triangle? There will be some tension between Dr. Holly Martin (Day), Dr. Parrish (Wheaton) and Fargo (Grayston).

First up, a reminder:  Warehouse 13 returns to the Syfy channel on July 11th.

Now,

It would seem that I was not alone in my appreciating the character of H.G. Wells played by Jaime Murray on Warehouse 13.  There was enough interest that the Syfy Channel is developing a spin-off with H.G. Wells.

Right now, the plan for the story is for the story of the spin-off to take place in the 1890′s when Warehouse 12 is trying to recruit Wells, but she works as a free-agent solving tough cases.

-

I presume that they’ll be using Jaime Murray again, but there was no word, one way or the other if that would be the case.  We can only hope!

After Warehouse 13, Jaime Murray was in an episode of Suite 7 and landed a small role in the prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.

Today it was found out that Fox has put the nail in the coffin of a few shows that folks were interested in, making room for other new pilots and such for the upcoming 2011/2012 TV season!

We’ve already noted that Human Target, Breaking In and The Chicago Code were all cancelled by Fox.  Now we can add Lie To Me to that list of dumped shows, and Traffic Light, if you watched that.

Shows that Fox has picked up to add to its slate of entertainment includes Alcatraz, Finder, New Girl & I Hate My Teenage Daughter.

About Alcatraz

Alcatraz is a Bad Robot (J.J. Abrams) production that will include stars Sam Neill, Jorge Garcia, Nagra Parminder & Stargate alumni Paul McGillion.

The show is about a team of FBI agents as they try to figure out the mystery behind a group of Alcatraz prisoners and guards who suddenly appear in present day, after having gone missing 30 years prior.

Other cast includes Jason Butler Harner, Jonny Coyne, Robert Forster, Santiago Cabrera and Sarah Jones.

'Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior' TV show logo 1

The spin-off, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior is coming at us, scheduled for a Feb 16th premiere.  It will star Forest Whitaker, Beau Garrett, Janeane Garofalo, Kirsten Vangsness (she’s splitting time between both Criminal Minds shows) & Michael Kelly.

CBS is put out a 2-minute teaser trailer of the premiere episode of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.

When I watched the episode of Criminal Minds that introduced the cast of the spin-off and the premise behind the team, it didn’t capture my imagination as much as I expected it to.  But I am looking forward to this new show and I want to see it do well.  I’ve always enjoyed Mr. Whitaker’s work.  I look forward to what he can do with this new role.

The Closer Spin-Off

TNT told EW that they’re looking to extend the premise of The Closer by ordering six more episodes of this, the last season of The Closer with the idea that these final/extra episodes will be preparing the viewers for a potential new spin-off series.

They’re calling the last six episodes a swan song for the series star, Kyra Sedgwick, whose character will be introducing the new lead character for the spin-off.

Right now TNT is calling the spin-off for The Closer, Major Crimes.  It’s the working title.

Major Crimes will be looking at what happens to the crooks that aren’t sent to Death Row that probably should be.  It will be, what they call a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at the realistic angle of today’s criminal justice system.

No cast has been announced yet for Major Crimes, and they’ve noted that this final season of The Closer has been the most-watched, averaging 8.4 million viewers per episode.

Amy Acker, Sarah Gadon and Geoff Stults in 'Happy Town'

It was announced Friday that Geoff Stults landed the lead role in the Bones spin-off for their adaptation of “The Locator.”  Stultz joins the already cast Michael Clarke Duncan in the Bones spin-off about a man with the skills to find just about anything.

You might remember Geoff Stults from his role of Ben Kinkirk in 7th Heaven.  Or from Reunion, October Road, or Happy Town.  If you’re not a TV watcher, then you may have caught him in Wedding Crashers or She’s Out of My League or I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell on the silver screen.

Bones TV Series Spin-off

-

News on the web is that Fox is looking to create a spin-off series from the David Boreanaz & Emily Deschanel starrer, Bones.

The spin-off isn’t coming from anyone we’ve met in the show yet, but from a new character they’ll be introducing in the December 6th episode called Walter Sherman, and will be recurring thereafter.

The spin-off may or may not happen, it all depends on the actor snagged for the role.  The character will be skeptical of everything, constantly asks irrelevant and offensive questions and has quite the ability to be able to find anything.

Eh…  I get moving to a spin-off from a known commodity, but that last time Fox tried to create a spin-off from an new character they were introducing didn’t pan out at all… remember the PI from House?  And what’s with this House-like personality trait?

Eh, we’ll see how it goes and who they get.  [ TVGuide ]

Dollhouse, Buffy, Angel & The Guild Comic News!

Dollhouse Epitaths from Dark Horse

We know that during the series run of Dollhouse, Joss Whedon was a wee bit downtrodden about the idea of doing a comic version of the show.  He went from saying “no,” to “maybe,” to there are no plans to do this.  I’m happy to report that now we have definitive news that Dark Horse Comics will be carrying on the torch of the Eliza Dushku starrer in comic book form!  Shiny!  Can I say shiny about a Dollhouse title?  Hope so, I just did!  (But then again… if you read this column, you already knew about the Dark Horse Epitath titles…  right!?  If you were around reading this fledgling website site back in July 0f ’10 that is.)

The Dark Horse Comics Dollhouse title will be written by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and will pick up the battle of our heroes after the point in time where the TV series ended, during the era that we were teased about in the episodes “Epitaph One” and “Epitaph Two.”  Whedon and Tancharoen both wrote for the TV series, so they both bring brains full of knowledge and ideas from the franchise.  Hence, I’m not worried about the title flopping in the eyes of the fans.

Cliff Richards will be the artist and we can expect the title to be released in the mainstream sometime in 2011.  (There was already a special preview version sold during the San Diego Comic-Con event.

Dark Horse announced a few things at the New York Comic Con event, Dollhouse being one of them.

No pun intended, but the cast of Discovery Channel‘s Deadliest Catch are back on board the show.  Discovery dropped their lawsuit about the spin-off and our captains are back on board.

Since I’ve covered the break up, (Deadliest Catch Cast Quitting due to Lawsuits) I figured I should touch on when Discovery folded to the stars of one of their biggest stars.

Kudos to the real-world stars for standing up for the pseudo political legal moves on Discovery’s part!

The SYFY CHANNEL

The Syfy Channel is adapting the hit series Being Human for American consumers.  The original UK series stars Russell Tovey, Lenora Crichlow and Aidan Turner as a werewolf, ghost and vampire who end up as roommates and try to wrangle out a normal existence in life, as much as it is.

The Syfy Channel’s version will be starring Sam Witwer (Smallville), Meaghan Rath (The Assistants), Sam Huntington (Cavemen, Superman Returns) and Mark Pellegrino (Lost, Supernatural).

This reimagined version has our stars carving out a life in Boston as they help each other out trying to lead as normal a lives as they can with their afflictions.  Witwer will be the vampire, Huntington will be the werewolf and Rath will be the ghost.  Of course Pellegrino plays Bishop.

If you remember, Sam Witwer played Davis Bloome aka Doomsday on Smallville and prior to that, pilot Crashdown in the reimagined version of Battlestar Galactica.  Rath, besides The Assistants, was also on 15/Love as Adena Stiles.  Sam Huntington played Jimmie Olsen in Superman Returns and was also in Fanboys.  And for Bishop, I don’t think they could have picked a better actor in Pellegrino.  He’s already played the devil in Supernatural and another other worldly being in Lost.  Should I mention his role in Dexter?
