sponsor

NASCAR News and opinion from Brusimm.comUPS has been a mainstay sponsor of NASCAR for quite some time.  But as with anything these days, change is inevitable.  Especially in this economic era.

So it’s with no surprise that it’s being reported that UPS will be cutting back on their primary sponsorship of the Roush Fenway Racing No. 6 car that’s driven by David Ragan.

In 2012, UPS will be stepping away from it’s full-time sponsorship and ride the hood for only four to eight races.  UPS is also looking to move its sponsor dollars to the No. 99 Ford driven by Carl Edwards.

With the UPS stepping back in NASCAR, there is other news regarding UPS and their marketing dollars.

UPS has signed a multi-year agreement with the Pac-12 and IMG College, which is linked to 68 other IMG-repped universities nationwide.

I think Michael Bay needs to take note when a studio puts money into a NASCAR sponsorship that lasts more than one race! (And I don’t mean that in a bad way.)  At least that’s the case with the new Cowboys & Aliens sponsorship taking place on the JD Motorsports NASCAR Series car driven by Mike Wallace! This is a first!  Check out the article below and see why some call me your “go-to guy” on matters of movie marketing, product placement and NASCAR!

COWBOYS and ALIENS NASCAR NNS paint scheme

-

JD Motorsports has partnered up with the movie Cowboys & Aliens, starring Daniel Craig and directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man).  The movie is due in movie theaters on July 29th.  What’s unique about this sponsorship compared to the dozens of other movie, TV and product sponsorships we’ve seen in NASCAR previously is this is a NASCAR first for the fact that the sponsor will be on the hood of the car for more than one race, in fact, the car will carry the sponsor for ten races.  May 28th will be the first event, at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

What’s more, fans will have the opportunity to have their submitted photos grace the car’s paint scheme in one of those totally awesome mosaics they do with itty bitty little images that make up one bigger image.  After fans submit their photos, the mosaic scheme will show up at the July 1st race at Daytona.  (I’ve had my name on several paint schemes that incorporated fan names and paint schemes.  It’s fun to find where they put you on the paint scheme!)

Daniel Craig in "Cowboys & Aliens"

If you want to participate, go check out the film’s official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cowboysandaliens) or website (www.cowboysandaliensmovie.com) or enter via your mobile devices by texting “RACE” to 90210. Or if you’re at the races where the car will be, you can use your smart phones to scan a QR code that will be visible on the hauler, car and hero cards at the races.

(Yes, attendees can hang around the cars, garages, track and pit stalls during non-race & practice hours.)

Bobby Hutchens, Director of Competition, Darian Grub, crew chief, and Tony Stewart, Stewart-Haas Racing's driver/owner

The world’s leading synthetic oil, ExxonMobil’s Mobil 1, has signed on to sponsor Tony Stewart and his No. 14 Chevy Impala for 2011.  The oil company will be on the hood of the car for the races that Office Depot will not sponsor. They’ll also be an associate sponsor on Ryan Newman’s No. 39 car.  This is such awesome news for the Stewart-Haas Racing team!

Starting with Atlanta, Robby Gordon Motorsports will have a few new components on his NASCAR Sprint Cup team.

The first is Kevin Conway, who will be taking the wheel of the No. 7 Toyota for the rest of the year.

The 2nd component to this is that ExtenZe will be on the hood of the No. 7 Toyota, for what looks like the rest of the 2010 season.

It’s good to see the team get an influx of new blood and money, but to be honest, I’m not sure I’m going to care about the No. 7 machine as much as when Robby was behind the wheel.

I enjoy rooting for the small organization whose driver also gets behind the wheel each weekend to make it happen.

With the sudden flux of sponsors bouncing around the NASCAR garage like a superball, there’s still speculation, (No fact yet) as to where Budweiser may end up at.   Forget the rumors.  Let’s have at with a new premise from NASCAR Bits & Pieces.

Fantasy NASCAR Driver & Sponsor Team ups.  This idea was prompted by the Shell / Pennzoil deal, and here’s my idea:

Budweiser to the No. 14 Chevy of Tony Stewart.

Yea…  as far as I’m concerned, Tony is much more the drinking man than the image Kasey Kahne as ever projected.

Plus with some of the ads that Tony has done with Old Spice, plus look at some of the funny s**t Budweiser has put out, I think Tony would fit right into the mold of a Budweiser driver.

No, it’s probably not going to happen, but heck, it’s fun to think about!

With some sponsors starting to pull out of their contracts with Tiger Woods, some of them look like pretty expensive contracts.  Some companies have even wholly depended on Tiger Woods with their entire company image.  This includes many ads in various forms, including billboards.

I can’t help but wonder how expensive it’s going to be for a company like Accenture to change all their billboards around the nation?  How much labor will go into designing, painting and reconfiguring billboards.  I know this is a small drop in the overall bucket, but dang…

I think this goes a long way towards using electronic billboards.  Rather than manual labor outside, you just have a programmer draw up a new image and another programmer to switch the billboard network with one flip of a switch or two.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase for the Cup 2009I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but our primary series NASCAR Cup sponsor, Sprint Nextel, posted a loss of $478 million in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

Sprint lost subscribers during the 3rd quarter that amounted to 545,000 customers.  Meanwhile Verizon and AT&T gained subscribers.

If I weren’t a NASCAR fan, I wouldn’t care.  After doing physical comparisons between cell carriers, I’ve been a Verizon customer.  They just have better coverage overall, as far as my experiences have gone.

As Sprint looks to tackle these problems, they’re cutting the fat.   And yet as I research this issue, I see this just didn’t happen overnight.

Sprint had to cut 6,000 jobs in January of ’09, which was looked to save $just over $1 billion.  This was a 14% force cut back then.

With Brown-Forman Corporation (Jack Daniels) ending their sponsorship ties with Richard Childress Racing (RCR), I’ve got to wonder just how easy it’s going to be for them to get some Cup series sponsors?

I only ask because they’re just not shining at the top of their game this year, and shining is a prerequisite for snagging those all important sponsors.

This will be interesting indeed.  So much for that ban that NASCAR lifted 4 years ago on the hard liquor sponsors.

A NASCAR Sponsor Test, Product Review by Bruce Simmons

Since AMP Energy drink by Mountain Dew is sponsoring our favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., I thought I’d give it a swig test and see what it’s about. The site has the car on the splash page.. cool and they have a count down to their first race and a few extra’s like this image abailable for download. Now that’s how you sponsor a driver!)

I picked up a “Tall Boy” can at the supermarket and looked it over. I like the green color of the can.

Looking over the label, it’s got stuff in it I haven’t heard of: Maltodextrin, (Is that like Malt-o-Meal?), Ginseng, Taurine, B Vitamins, Guarana (Is that Bat stuff??). (Links are to Wikipedia entries for your edification!)

I’ve been a big fan of Mountain Dew for some time. When I consume MD with PowerBars, people say they can usually find me attached to my ceiling after this kind of power lunch.

At first, I found a disclaimer on the can a bit curious: “This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” After checking out the Wikipedia links, I understand it to a small degree.

Ok, so my first impression – was that of licorice, but then I have decided that it’s like Mountain Dew, a little less sweet with some black licorice type flavor. I’m not a fan, but I think I can get used to it, if for anything else, as a coffee substitute while supporting my driver. (I am so screwed if Starbucks ever sponsors anyone I like.)

Well that’s it. ButasfarasIcantellit’snotaffectingmeatallllll.
