The new movies coming out this week include Val Kilmer, Ray Liotta, Gina Gershon, Ron Eldard, Dennis Quaid and Aimee Teegarden!

Wednesday, January 4th:
This Wednesday, Breathless, starring Val Kilmer, Ray Liotta and Gina Gershon comes out. It’s directed and co-written by Jesse Baget (White Knight).
It’s categorized as a thriller, but the production company calls it a dark comedy.
Breathless is a dark and violent story that follows Lorna (Gershon) a strong-willed Texas woman who’s had enough of her untrustworthy husband Dale’s (Kilmer) criminal acts and lack of husbandry and looks up an old friend to help figure out what to do about this.

Dean Cain & William Katt are starring a smaller, new movie called Sweetwater, which is brought to us by director/producer/editor Brian Skiba.

Friday, January 6th:
The new movies opening in movie theaters on Friday include
• The Devil Inside
The Devil Inside is directed and co-written by William Brent Bell (2006′s Stay Alive). It includes a relatively unknown cast (to me), but includes Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama & Suzan Crowley.
Tell me that movie trailer doesn’t look creepy?

New movies coming out this week are next to nothing ,with the exception of a few small new movies, no one wants to compete with the New Year’s Eve weekend with new movies.

What that means is that this last weekend’s top box office grossing movies, Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks and the like will still be what might be considered the new movies in theaters this upcoming weekend.

With that said…

Production Status of Different Upcoming New Movies
It’s the year-ending holiday week, so I’m guessing that nothing huge has developed on any movie set or lot, but here’s a list of the different states of production status for some upcoming movies:
In Development

· Avatar 2 (December 2014)
· Ghostbusters III (???)
· Jurassic Park IV (???)
· The Wolverine (2013)

Today, I came across an insightful interview with John Billingsly. Billingsly played Dr. Phlox on Star Trek: Enterprise.
In his interview with The Indianapolis Star, at first I felt like he was shooting his career in the foot, but by the end of the interview, I realized how insightful he was in his chat in the interview.
I thought it worthy to look at and review, hence, a quick write up. And I’d like to preface the recap of his interview with one thought that was triggered by some things …
Movies and television are nothing more than a business. No matter how much you love a show, a series or a movie, they are only made to make money for the studios. As soon as the TV ratings drop below an acceptable level, it’s not longer a business venture worth investing in. No matter if there are a few thousand fans that are devoted to a franchise, that’s not enough for an advertiser to support a show. Hence why some smart and favorite shows go away.
With that said, let’s check out that interview with Star Trek‘s John Billingsly.

A Theory Why Star Trek Enterprise Failed
When the prequel, Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled, apparently the actor who played D. Phlox, had an opinion on what happened.

I think you all know that Peter Weller has signed on with the cast of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 2 movie. Right?
Weller fans are happy, but now the curiosity turns to wondering if he’ll take up the role of Kahn (Yes, Kahn.) or some other character. Hints include that he’ll be playing a C.E.O. of some sorts.
Down Another Rabbit Hole of Thought:
Some think that Abrams reviving Kahn in his reboot is a cop out. But then again, I thought the reboot going down the alternate time line avenue wasn’t going to pan out and that surprised the heck out of me when it turned out to be damn entertaining.

This upcoming 2011 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we have a few things going on around the house, much like I suspect you do. If you’re going to be taking it easy and just hanging out around your home, whether it’s quietly stashed away, or with loved ones, your TV is going to be staring at you… calling your name, saying ‘watch me,’ I have all kinds of TV series marathons or movie marathons going on.
I see The Walking Dead, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, NCIS, & a Firefly* marathon… (*If you get Science Channel)
So if you pick up that remote and fire it off at your TV, here are a few things coming up for the Thanksgiving weekend… a TV marathon or two, so to speak.
And folks… to anyone coming by, whether you’re popping in once or a repeat offender (visitor) checking out this post, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who comes by and visits my tiny little corner of the web.
Happy Thanksgiving and bless all of you and yours…
Now, back to my regularly scheduled snark and stuff…

UPDATE: The Winner of ‘The Captains’ was Ronald O. I’ll be in touch! Thanks for coming by!
- The Captains is a documentary movie written, directed and narrated by William Shatner, the Captain Kirk from the 1960′s Star Trek series. The documentary involves William Shatner locating and interviewing the various actors that have played the captains in the various Star Trek franchise TV shows or movies.
The personalities we spend the most time with in The Captains are Sir Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Avery Brooks (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager), Scott Bakula (Star Trek: Enterprise) & Chris Pine (The new James Kirk in J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek movie.)
At the front half of the documentary, the introductory or opening interviews are quick and to the point, as they bounce around from one to the other. They’re quick intros where Shatner asks the actor how they got involved in acting. It gives the viewer a quick feel for how each session will be like.
During the interviews, we don’t just get to become familiar with the different actors, we also get insights from William Shatner himself as he takes moments to interject his own experiences from his life, both Star Trek and non Star Trek related in either the interviews or spots between the interviews.

Below are two snippets of movie news on the movies Real Steel and the upcoming Star Trek movie… check it out:
-
Real Steel Robot Action Movie Clip
If you’re waiting for the Hugh Jackman starrer called Real Steel, a new movie clip was released recently demonstrating some of the robot boxing action we’ll be seeing in the movie.
Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman, a down and out boxer who is contending with the new sport of boxing, where robots do the ass kicking instead of humans. Part of the story addresses how Jackman’s character has to contend with him being out of a job because of the robots.
Me, I’m just waiting for a rock’em sock’em robot joke somewhere in the movie.
Other cast includes Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie and more. The movie is due out this November.
CGI sure has come a long way…

Sci-Fi Conventions for the month of September 2011

For those of you looking for something to do in September of 2011, something that supports your love of the sci-fi genre, there are a few big convention events coming up in September, if you live near Atlanta, Nashville or Chicago.
-
Dragon*Con
First, don’t forget that Dragon*Con is coming up in early September and seems to be the only major event taking place this month. APE 2011 is still a wee bit off, in October as is the Mid-Ohio Comic Con, which takes place in late October in the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
-
Dragon*Con is taking place Labor Day Weekend on September 2-5, 2011, in Altanta Georgia. (www.dragoncon.org)
The convention has a very unique way of hosting its event. Rather than in one location or convention center, the event will spreads its 40,000+ member convention over five different hotels in the downtown Atlanta section near Centennial Olympic Park.

The Women of Comic Con [Images]
As with any convention based on sci-fi, fantasy, anime or such, always has attendees who want to represent their favorite franchises and characters at the events. Though fans head to events like Comic Con to attend the panels with their favorite celebrities and displays, it’s always a nice bonus to enjoy the cosplay that takes place at these events.

At the genre conventions there are various degrees of costumes that attendees wear. There are those that are a bit lazy and just toss something together with what I call a generic look. There are the attendees who pay close attention-to-detail and there are the professional cosplay characters that studios and such hire to walk the floors of the convention. Admittedly, in most cases, the professionals look pretty good.
Then it seems that women attendees tend to put much more work into their costumes. That’s not always the case, but the majority look better than the guys. Or they have it easier when all they need to do is pick up a sword or a gun and attire themselves with something slinky!
Anyway, let’s take a look at some of the pics I took of the various states of cosplay at Comic Con…
Here are some girls handing out business cards:
