First up is some TV news….

DOCTOR WHO SERIES 11.2, Karen Gillan plays Amy Pond

Over the last few months, there’s been speculative news that Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who.  But a few weeks after the initial report, there’s been a flurry of press bits being pumped out denying that he is leaving.

He is contractually obligated to fourteen more episodes of Doctor Who.

But while everyone is wondering about Matt Smith, we now learn that the Doctor’s companion actors, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are leaving the Doctor Who production.

They will be back for the next upcoming season, but they’re headed out the door and the next season will be both actors’ final season.

{What is it with the turnover on this series?}

Steven Moffat teased that the end for their characters will be a heart breaking end.

So be it.

Doctor Who Sonic Screwdrivers 2011-05-03_08-56-37_91When I first saw this note about David Yates wanting to direct a Doctor Who movie, I saw it long before anyone else was spun up about it, more than 24 hours prior to writing this.  Now, at the time that I put this together, there are 16 pages of Doctor Who results as everyone pings off of everyone else about this news.

But the news seemed hopeful at best and with the project slated to being a few years off, I said “meh” to myself.  I’ll wait and see how that really develops.

But then one site got ahold of it, a few others saw them, then others and so forth and so on.  This piece now has a life of its own.  So be it.

The movie news for the TV show Doctor Who said that David Yates, who had directed the last four Harry Potter movies, and TV shows like State of Play & The Bill, has been tapped by BBC to help develop a Doctor Who movie with Jane Tranter, the boss of the Los Angeles office  of BBC Worldwide Productions.

And right now, they’re looking for/at writers.

John Barrowman fr 2009 Comic-ConWith the advent of Torchwood: Miracle Day premiering on STARZ on July 8th, fans of the franchise can’t help but wonder, what with John Barrowman again reprising his role of Captain Jack Harkness, if there could be a chance if he might once again reprise that very same role in the new Doctor Who series with Matt Smith.

Yea… that would be pretty nice, wouldn’t it? Believe it or not, the idea has actually been brought up in the hallways and back rooms of the show-runners of Doctor Who & Torchwood, or so John Barrowman has teased the world.

Barrowman has indicated that both Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat have chatted about bringing back Harkness. Since Jack showed up in that swan song scene with David Tennant, the thought has stuck in their craw.

Barrowman has publicly made it known that he’d return to Doctor Who at the drop of a hat!  Whether it being in the cards will actually make it a reality is a totally different matter.

DOCTOR WHO season 6

You have to love how they start these Doctor Who episodes on BBC America. After last week’s episode of Doctor Who, I wasn’t sure if any other episode will start as confounding or as exciting as that one. Man, was I wrong.

This new episode of Doctor Who, titled “Day of the Moon” started out rather powerfully, moved quickly through a few events that were all incredibly key to the entire story and in the end, ‘The Doctor’ does what he does best, and that’s maneuver our newest and most frightening enemy into such a situation that he ends up kicking their asses in a grand and smart fashion.

Kudos Steven Moffat, kudos and thank you!

The following, after the break will present SPOILERS for those of you who have DVR’d the BBC America episode

AICN is reporting that Steven Moffat noted at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh TV Festival 2010 that the upcoming season (series) of Doctor Who will be a bit different in format.  Rather than a single season of 13 episodes, we’ll be getting 2 seasons of 6 episodes each.

What’s happening is that the two 6-epi seasons are going to be connected by a “game changing” cliffhanger.  The shortened 6th season will return for Easter, leave us hanging through the summer and then kick it back in for what Moffat presumes will be the 7th season.

(Sniff, sniff… sounds like they’ve seen that the season splitting sales tactic of the Syfy Channel is catching on. And sadly, we’re helping it happen.)

The BBC has officially announced that “Doctor Who” with Matt Smith will be returning for a 6th season. Now that is shiny!  Steven Moffat will stay on-board as exec producer and will write 5 of the upcoming 13 episodes, plus the Christmas special.

As far as I’m concerned, season 5 was one of the best seasons of “Doctor Who” for me. Matt Smith brought the Doctor more alive for me than even David Tennant. But it isn’t that Matt Smith did it better than David Tennant. He presented it differently, with a fresh and near-quirky presentation that kept a lightness around his character while retaining the serious nature of his existence.

BBC Books has announced that they’ll be releasing a Doctor Who graphic novel called The Only Good Dalek, and it’s coming out on September 16th.  It follows the story of earth forces sending equipment captured in their fight against the Daleks to a secret station.  The Daleks find out about the station and there’s something worth fightin’ for to want back.

The Doctor and Amy Pond discover that it’s not just a think-tank, but a prison too.

2010 Comic Con News from Cinema Static

Sadly, we won’t be having a Doctor Who panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, but BBC America is trying to make up for it.

Why won’t they be there?  The crew will be busy filming the show and that’s a bit of a bummer.  Yet then again, though it would have been fantastic to see Matt Smith in person, the show definitely doesn’t need the propoganda.  It’s doing fantastic on its own merits.
