Syfy Channel News

If you’ve become attached to the Syfy channel’s newest show, Alphas, I’m thinking so has Syfy.

Syfy Logo

Syfy channel has taken it upon themselves to start lining up guest star appearances for Alphas.  Amongst the guests will be some of what I believe to be fan-favorites:

Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope), Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Alaina Huffman (Stargate Universe), Rebecca Mader (Lost), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman) and Peter Wingfield (Caprica).

If you want to know when who will appear when, here’s a list:

I just discovered a potential little gem in the movie, Knights of Badassdom.  I call it a little gem because four of its cast members are actors I like watching!  Those include Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten, Summer Glau and Steve Zahn.

Peter Dinklage and Ryan Kwanten in 'Knights of Badassdom' movie

For me, I have become a fan of Dinklage from his role in Game of Thrones, while Kwanten I’ve seen in True Blood.  Steve Zahn I really enjoyed in the sleeper movie that caught me by surprise, A Perfect Getaway, and of course, there’s Summer Glau, who captured many folks imaginations in Joss Whedon‘s Firefly.

In Knights of Badassdom, a bunch of

live-action role players conjure up a demon from hell by mistake and must deal with the consequences.”

In his directorial debut with director by Joe Lynch, it sounds like it could be a funny movie, but it’s labeled as a horror/fantasy/adventure movie in IMDb, but the press release calls it a humorous fantasy adventure.

And if you’re headed to 2011 Comic-Con, you’re in luck if you’re fans of any of these actors because they’ll be in Hall H on Saturday, July 23rd, scheduled for 2:15pm.

The panel will have a trailer for the movie and then…

Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion, two stars from 'Firefly' Series from Joss Whedon

A few weeks back Nathan Fillion had made a statement that amounted to what I could only surmise as a inner-secret wish but not something serious, when he said if he won the lottery, he’d buy the rights to Firefly.  The idea of Nathan Fillion buying the Firefly rights is a pretty exciting prospect.  In what I anticipated, there were a few others that showed a supportive mode of thought, a few other Firefly alumni, in both the showrunner and cast side, added to the hopes by saying that they support such a thought.

Fans went nuts.  Firefly fans are diehard Browncoats and any shred of hope is something that fans hang onto.  That’s why when they hear of something developing, they grasp that hope with every once of strength and not let go.  In fact some charge forward, hoping against the odds, that if they push this little snowball down the hill, it will roll, pick up some speed, some size, and become an unstoppable force.

Firefly fans are some of the best, most dedicated fans I think I’ve ever seen and I don’t blame them.

-

One fan group immediately started collecting pledges (not cash) for donations that would facilitate Nathan Fillion not having to win the lottery, but rather, fund his very idea of his being able to buy the rights.  But alas, some facts started to come to light about this dream and things started to slow down a bit and they’ve stopped actively collecting pledges.

-

The first bit of fact was that the idea that 20th Century Fox would actually sell the rights seemed far-fetched at best.  Would you sell a cash cow?  OK, it might not be a cash cow, put it is some stream of income somewhere, as networks continue to pay for the rights to air Firefly and people continue to purchase the series on DVD, where ever that money may go!

Firefly on Science Channel

This Sunday, March 6th, Joss Whedon‘s Firefly will be premiering on the Science Channel.  For those of you who have not ever seen the show, and yes, I’m betting there are plenty out there who haven’t, you are in for a great treat… if you get Science.

Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion, two stars from 'Firefly' Series from Joss WhedonOf course what’s amazing is that there repeat viewers that will probably tune in too!  I always find myself watching

In regards to the ferver that erupted about folks wanting Nathan Fillion to buy the rights to Firefly, I know we’d all love to see that happen, but realistically speaking, do you really think that 20th Century Fox would actually sell the rights to a guaranteed seller that they can keep pitching over and over?  I’m just saying.  Then again, if someone offered them $300 million for a $20-$30 million rights package, who knows!

Summer Glau in 'Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles'The Syfy Channel has purchased the rights to air Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (TSCC) sci-fi TV series.

Now that Syfy Channel has nabbed the rights, they plan to immediately start airing The Sarah Connor Chronicles starting on Thursday, April 7th. (OK, I said immediately… geologically, that’s immediately and that’s pretty fast for a show just picked up.)  Regardless, this will put Syfy back in the good graces of many, many fans of the show.

The show has two seasons under its belt when it was unceremoniously canceled in favor of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, despite the huge fan out-pouring of support from various websites, favoring TSCC over Dollhouse and other shows.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles starred Summer Glau, Lena Headey, Garret Dillahunt, Brian Austin Green, Thomas Dekker, Shirley Manson.  Writing credentials for the series included James Cameron (Do I really need to list his past films?) & Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, The Black Dahlia) & Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator 2, Armageddon, The Incredible Hulk).

Here’s a curious bit…   in what looks like an interesting turn of programming, Syfy is going to be airing the show four episodes at a time.  That’s going to burn right through the show pretty fast and at the hours it will air, I’m confused if they’re looking to track how well the show is received.  Then again, I’m not the TV programming expert here, just the expert TV viewer!

NBCs The Cape with David Lyons and Summer Glau

When I watched the premiere episode of The Cape, it felt like I was chatting with a confused child not knowing what they wanted.  The scenes were short and covered tons of material in spurts of time.  It took Joss’s girl, Summer Glau’s character, less than three minutes to meet, talk, reveal everything about herself, then trust The Cape to be his budding crime-stopping partner.

The criminals with their snake-slit eyes and scaley skin were right out of the classic Batman series.

Despite being a genre fan, The Cape doesn’t ignite my imagination.  It gives me everything I need at a quick glance/pace and doesn’t let me engage my imagination.  It’s like flipping pages in a comic book.  That’s that.

The following aren’t detailed notes, but could possibly be considered spoilers if you DVR’d The Cape for later viewing.

David Lyons in The Cape

The Cape premiered on NBC Sunday night, January 9th and moves to Mondays on January 17th.  The premiere hit us fast and hard.  The first 30 minutes fed us so much information that it dared to not be boring, but may have given us so much so quickly that it could have felt like a kaleidoscope of quick and quirky plot lines.

We meet Vince Faraday, played by David Lyons, who is the last good cop in this fictional city.  We see his family life, his being set up, his being adopted by a circus of criminals.  We then see his motivation for wanting to be a superhero and then his training under the auspices of various team members of the circus.  His main trainer being Max Malini (Keith David), the leader of this ragged band of performers.

Cinema Static on Brusimm logo

Continuing my new & returning show premier pieces that talk about the shows that are launching or relaunching this week for the mid-season time-frame.  Popular TV series returning from their midseason breaks include Chuck, Family GuyLie To Me and the NCIS shows.  Some of the new shows popping up include The Cape & Lights Out.

I’m as much of a genre fan as the next viewer and I’d love to see a genre show have a reasonable amount of success, but I’m just not feeling a good vibe.  What I mean by good vibe is that I don’t think the Nielsen families that make or break the fate of TV series.

David Lyons in The Cape

The Cape will star David Lyons (ER, Sea Patrol) as Vince Faraday, James Frain (True Blood, Tron: Legacy), Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse) & the deep-voiced Keith David (Death at a Funeral, Lottery Ticket).

NBCs The Cape with David Lyons and Summer Glau

NBC has a midseason drama lined up for us called The Cape.  It stars David Lyons (Yes, Dr. Simon Brenner from ER; Eat Pray Love) along with a favorite of many, Summer Glau.  Though Izabella Miko (Clash of the Titans, Coyote Ugly) was first only in the premiere, it seems that now she will be showing up for a five-episode arc, playing her skilled, alluring circus performer role.

The Cape is about a cop who becomes a masked here after finding himself framed for a crime.  Summer Glau plays a blogger who eventually gets involved in the cop’s plight.

I like these kind of shows… when they hang on to some semblance of reality or such.  It has the family connection and the angst.  It has Glau, though I’m not seeing any butt-kicking from her, but that’s fine.  It will be nice to see her doing something different.  I enjoyed Lyons role when he was on ER, but is this role going to bring out more of what he has as an actor?  Hope so.  It will be good to see him again.
