NBCs The Cape with David Lyons and Summer GlauNBC cut The Cape short and never aired the final episode.  If you were a fan of the ill-fated and oddly written fantasy action series, NBC did put up the final episode of The Cape online.

You can check it out at http://www.nbc.com/the-cape/.

When I first watched The Cape, it was challenging.  It was neither campy nor serious but an ugly conglomeration of both that didn’t work either way.  At least for me.

With the ratings dropping with every episode, I think NBC is going to cut its loses.  They’ve stopped production at the 10th episode and NBC has effectively announced that they’ve reduced their episode order to 10.

Thus, I presume, ends a very short and valiant effort on NBC’s part at another genre show.

Some day, NBC will hit it on the nose but this effort from The Cape seemed really odd, considering how much they hyped it up.

Last night’s airing of The Bachelor had a lot to worry about and I’m thinking pulled a lot of viewers in with the controversy of Emily’s NASCAR racing experience group date with Brad.

Though it was built up by the networks and other venues, and a bit confusing to me about her having to address the issue, it was addressed and in the end, she came through this event by tackling the deal head-on.  Good for her.

I explain why I was a bit confused here, Emily Maynard’s NASCAR Date.

What confuses me is that Brad continues to give that nutcase, Michele, a rose.  People say it’s proof that ABC meddles with their reality TV programming, because a lot don’t think Brad is that interested in the girl.  Whatever, it gives us someone decidedly easy to dislike.  (Especially if you’ve been keeping up with some of her news from the past.)

Harry’s Law, starring Kathy Bates, pulled in a strong 7.4/12 with the overnight numbers.  The Bachelor, a 7.1 rating/10 share.  The Cape pulled in a 3.3/5 & Chuck, a 3.5/6.

NBCs The Cape with David Lyons and Summer Glau

When I watched the premiere episode of The Cape, it felt like I was chatting with a confused child not knowing what they wanted.  The scenes were short and covered tons of material in spurts of time.  It took Joss’s girl, Summer Glau’s character, less than three minutes to meet, talk, reveal everything about herself, then trust The Cape to be his budding crime-stopping partner.

Batman 1960's TV Series

The criminals with their snake-slit eyes and scaley skin were right out of the classic Batman series.

The Bachelor

Well to be honest, thought I don’t remember historical numbers, The Bachelor with Brad Womack is pulling in just over 8 million viewers this season which puts it on par with the premiere of The Cape, which pulled in 8M viewers last Sunday.

I’m not sure if that’s good for The Cape or bad for The Bachelor.

Though 8.42M isn’t too shabby, Lie To Me is circling a drain with 5.5M.  What stings is that a repeat of Two and Half Men drew just over 10M viewers while a new episode of Castle pulled in 9.2M viewers.  That’s with the news that Castle was renewed for yet one more season.  Hooya!

Ya know, I skipped the first hour of The Bachelor because I was watching real TV over on Syfy as a Star Trek movie was finishing up.  OK, it felt like real TV versus The Bachelor.  But everytime I walked through the living room to get something Brad kept saying how this is difficult or he’s nervous or something to that affect.  Let it go man!  We got it, you went through therapy and things are different.  But to keep hearing the same drabble (spin) over and over is getting old.

Despite being a genre fan, The Cape doesn’t ignite my imagination.  It gives me everything I need at a quick glance/pace and doesn’t let me engage my imagination.  It’s like flipping pages in a comic book.  That’s that.

The following aren’t detailed notes, but could possibly be considered spoilers if you DVR’d The Cape for later viewing.

David Lyons in The Cape

The Cape premiered on NBC Sunday night, January 9th and moves to Mondays on January 17th.  The premiere hit us fast and hard.  The first 30 minutes fed us so much information that it dared to not be boring, but may have given us so much so quickly that it could have felt like a kaleidoscope of quick and quirky plot lines.

We meet Vince Faraday, played by David Lyons, who is the last good cop in this fictional city.  We see his family life, his being set up, his being adopted by a circus of criminals.  We then see his motivation for wanting to be a superhero and then his training under the auspices of various team members of the circus.  His main trainer being Max Malini (Keith David), the leader of this ragged band of performers.

Continuing my new & returning show premier pieces that talk about the shows that are launching or relaunching this week for the mid-season time-frame.  Popular TV series returning from their midseason breaks include Chuck, Family GuyLie To Me and the NCIS shows.  Some of the new shows popping up include The Cape & Lights Out.

I’m as much of a genre fan as the next viewer and I’d love to see a genre show have a reasonable amount of success, but I’m just not feeling a good vibe.  What I mean by good vibe is that I don’t think the Nielsen families that make or break the fate of TV series.

David Lyons in The Cape

The Cape will star David Lyons (ER, Sea Patrol) as Vince Faraday, James Frain (True Blood, Tron: Legacy), Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse) & the deep-voiced Keith David (Death at a Funeral, Lottery Ticket).

Cinema Static on Brusimm logo

We’re all wondering what’s up with some of our favorite shows from some of our favorite networks…  so I dug up all my press releases and scoured the web and my arms are tired…  oh, wrong joke.  I’ve pulled together the 2010/2011 season return/premiere dates for A&E, ABC, AMC, BBC America, Cartoon Network, CBS, The CW, DirecTV, FOX, FX, HBO, NBC, Showtime, STARZ, The Syfy Channel, TNT & USA networks.

Some dates are generic as in Spring or Summer of 2011, while others are still to be determined (TBD).

Where show titles start with ‘the’, I’ve put it at the end of the title for sorting purposes.  The Cape will look like Cape, The;  Apprentice, The; Walking Dead, The; and so forth.  I did that because sometimes I don’t remember that there’s a ‘the’ at the beginning of a show’s name so what the heck.

Don’t Be Confused by one particular show in the list, Being Human.  It’s been on BBC America for a few years and while it is still actively in production and airing on BBC, the Syfy Channel has done their own re-imagined version.  Yep, I don’t get it either.  The date for Caprica is a marathon date…  all remaining episodes will air on January 4th.

Speaking of Caprica, there are four shows we’re saying farewell to for this 2010/2011 midseason schedule:  Caprica, Friday Night LightsLife Unexpected, Medium & Undercovers.

There are a lot of shows that I don’t cover on the site but since I was pulling the info together I thought I’d include it all.  Below are several lists.  Don’t be fooled.  It’s the same list sorted a million ways because I don’t know how to put one listing in a post with sortable headers.  Besides, being the Excel guru that I think I am, it was just easier to sort and sort and sort.

Tables are sorted thus:

  • 1st chart by TV Series name,
  • 2nd chart by date,
  • 3rd chart by network.

At least that’s the plan, here under the Cinema Static column on Brusimm.com!  I’ve highlighted in the alphabetical list which shows we watch and I suddenly get why I’m so dang tired these days!!!

UPDATED with new premiere date for Smallville and Supernatural.
