Jumping from the family friendly animated film to the serious movie buff and fan of the franchise, we have this week,

Rise of the Planet ofthe Apes on DVD and Blu-ray

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Two-Disc Edition Blu Ray + DVD/Digital Copy Combo)

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto.

As far as I’m concerned, this prequel to the Planet of the Apes classic movie franchise did the franchise justice and did not disappoint.

In case you didn’t know, The Expendables, starring Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Steve Austin pulled in around $275 million worldwide.

The movie was made, sort of indie style, meaning it was made outside the normal studio system.  Then Lionsgate picked it up for distribution.

The sequel for The Expendables is being developed by Stallone under the umbrella of producer Millennium Films and is meeting with directors to helm the next film in the franchise.

He had starred and directed the first film.

The script for The Expendables 2 has been written already, by David Agosto (Big Canyon) and Ken Kaufman (The Missing).

New DVD and Blu-ray Releases in movies, TV, kids & family

Looking over the new DVD & Blu-ray releases for November 23rd, 2010, there are over 250 new titles.  This week surprises me, being that the last few weeks have had some great titles.   This week it seems rather dull in the excitement category, but it could just be me.

This week is led by the Beauty and the Beast Two Disc Diamond Edition re-release of the classic animated story from Disney.  We also have The Expendables with Sylvester Stallone, and Eat Pray Love with Julia Roberts.

That’s really it for big titles but I’ll dig a bit deeper and see what other new DVD & Blu-ray releases might be coming along with these other titles.

In the upcoming weeks we have some great titles coming out… see below for those!

SCOTT PILGRIM Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers

This weekend, I chose to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World rather than The Expendables. (Expandables if you’re typing too fast!).  I was dazzled and happy I saw it. The audience broke out in applause at the end and it was a great flick for all ages.

But.

Yea, but Scott Pilgrim vs. The World performed pretty poorly at the box office, bringing in barely more than $10 million while The Expendables netted Sylvester Stallone a $35 million opening weekend.  Hmm, how’d that happen?

Over on HitFix, Gregory Ellwood put it to us about what he thought went wrong with Scott Pilgrim.  Bad marketing seemed to be the big one for myself.

It wasn’t bad marketing overall that fell short, but a number of factors really. First Ellwood points out that Michael Cera isn’t all that there is and isn’t drawing crowds. He points out that the marketing promo art hides Cera’s face. Is it really that bad? This was my first real Michael Cera experience and I thought he played the resolute and angst filled young man pretty well.  Yet some say that we see the same character presentation from Cera in all his movies.

But what I think the primary problem is, as Gregory points out, is the subject matter that was really hard to convey to the hopeful audience. Like I pointed out in my review of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, I wasn’t sure going into Scott Pilgrim what it was. Cartoon, video game, battle of the bands? The graphic novel is a tough product to sell because of the presentation, despite the brilliant delivery and writing of the screenplay.

SKYLINE MOVIE

The Skyline movie has been keeping a fairly low profile up until late July when Skyline viral advertising hit the San Diego Comic Con event. They had some cool viral goodies and what not, but now, now we get to see a truly disturbing teaser trailer for Skyline.  It’s disturbing in a good way, that the trailer already sucked me in to the idea of the story.

In the last few moments of the trailer, they present a visual I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a movie… and, (here comes the pun) it sucks! You’ll see.

Skyline has a fairly fresh cast with

  • Eric Balfour (Spread, The Spirit),
  • Donald Faison (Something New, Remember the Titans),
  • David Zayas (The Expendables, Michael Clayton),
  • Scottie Thompson (Star Trek; TV Series: Trauma, NCIS) &
  • Brittney Daniel (White Chicks, TV Series: The Game).

Weekend Box Office Performance

-

I’m not completely surprised that The Other Guys, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg took the No. 1 spot at the box office this last weekend, but Inception held on the 2nd spot and Step Up 3D was 3rd on the weekend performing list.

Title Weekend Gross
The Other Guys $35.6M $35.6M
Inception $18.6M $228M
Step Up 3D $15.5M $15.5M
Salt $11.1M $92M
Dinner for Schmucks $10.5M $46.7M

The Kids Are All Right $2.61M $14M

Opening Movies for this Friday

The Expendables

-

The Expendables has a heck of a cast filled to the brim with action stars. It stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, (A Buffy & Angle alum) Charisma Carpenter & Mickey Rourke. Though it would appear uncredited per IMDb, we’ll also be seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger & Bruce Willis.

The movie was co-written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, and co-written with David Callaham (Doom, Horsemen, Tell Tale), The Expendables is about a group of mercenaries who are sent to South America to help overthrow a dictator, but the job isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be… or more to the point, is a lot more than expected.

The movie would seem to be anticipated by many and I for one am looking forward to seeing Jason Statham doing something else besides being a driver, but aside from looking awesome, I’m sadly seeing reviews that run the gamut, from predictable to fun. We’ll see!

2010 Comic-Con News from Cinema Static

The 2010 Comic-Con event in San Diego is coming at us pretty fast.  Plans are set, travel itineraries cemented and the anticipation of little sleep, survival rations and Kindle books (Amazon: Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G, 6) are at the ready.  I suggest books because if you head off to Hall H, the lines can sometimes be pretty long!  In fact, very long.  One year, it wrapped out the door, around the south end of the building to the west side of the convention center, and then all the way back across the back of the entire convention center, W of the hotels down the walk path, and down the bay for a little bit longer.  I am not sh**ing you!  Bring books, extra phone batteries, or lots of cards to play games with.

Remakes and sequels, that’s the theme today as THR’s Risky Business is reporting that Skip Woods (Hit Man) is looking to possibly write up a new Die Hard script for Fox.  Yikes, the Die Hard franchise is definitely living up to its name.

No word on any actor’s involvement.  We all know who we’re thinking of and Bruce Willis is still cranking them out with The Expendables, Red and Kane & Lynch.

Because the Die Hard movies are such sarcastic masterpieces of violent fun, I’m sure we’ll all be receptive to another one.  It’s when it gets to the point that Bruce Willis is in Die Hard, The Retirement Home and beating evil geriatrics with a cane, is when we need to consider calling it quits!
