the hangover

Word on the street is that there was grumbling when The Hangover 2 came out and  it was pretty much the same thing as the first one.

To be honest, I am not surprised.  The first movie not only worked out very well for the franchise, but was such a huge hit, that a sequel was inevitable.  With the success of the first movie and added like-style humor in the marketing of the 2nd part, seemed to make it a shoe-in for the office numbers.

But I was concerned The Hangover 2 was going to be a lot like the first one, so I skipped it.  I’m thinking that I’ll plan to catch it on VoD.  Which is coming up pretty soon if I’m not mistaken.

But word on the street is that The Hangover 3 will be different in structure from the first two and will take place in the exotic and exciting locale of Los Angeles, CA.

New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

This week the new movies coming out on Friday, December 9th, looking to do battle with vampires and Muppets include  include actors such as  Michelle Pfeiffer, Gary Oldman, Jonah Hill,  and quite a few more.

But will any of these new movies contend with the box office top-10 movies right now?  Maybe.  I can’t imagine they won’t at least show up on the chart unlike last week’s new contenders that didn’t contend.

Farther down I touch on production status of some of the more anticipated movies coming out next year (If there are any you are interested in, lemme know, I can look it up.) and a little movie news to boot!

First up of the new movies this week,

•      New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is directed by Garry Marshall (Valentine’s Day), and written by Katherine Fugate (Valentine’s Day & on TV: Army Wives).

The cast includes a rather popular ensemble, like Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Cary Elwesm, Alyssa Milano, Common, Jessica Biel and many more!

If this one is anything like Valentine’s Day, it should be a fun film to go see.

New Movies from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lqThe upcoming Summer movie season is looking, as usual, like it is chock-a-block full of fun movies for everyone.  The movie offerings range from a Jon Favreau directed western sci fi, remakes of a few classics, Michael Bay and others are tossing a few robots at us, Ryan Reynolds and others are starring in a couple of superhero movies, and a couple of aliens, like one that escapes from J.J. Abrams‘ train and such.

From the sounds of things, there’s a little of something for everyone this summer at the box office.

Look over this check-list of summer 2011 movies…

Opening Movies from Cinema Static Logo

In this week’s opening movies,  we get some Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, James FrancoThandi Newton in movies opening this Friday at the box office!

Opening Movies Friday, 11-5-10

-

In Due Date, Robert Downey Jr. plays Peter Highman, a high strung actor who has to skedaddle across country to get to his child’s birth on time.  The hitch?  Well, is that he’s hitching a ride across country with an aspiring actor.

Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover), and judging by the previews, it looks awesomely funny and being Downey Jr., I expect it to be pretty funny.

=

In Megamind, Metro Man (voiced by Brad Pitt) retires and his ex-nemesis, Megamind, (voiced by Will Ferrell) finds his life dull with no good guy to fight!  He creates a new bad guy who puts his sites on destroying the world and Megamind has to save the day.

When you think most profitable movies ever, I bet the first few films that come to mind might be James Cameron‘s works of Avatar and Titanic.  But there are movies that spent a lot less to film and still cranked in the bucks.  If you dwell on it, Cameron dropped big bucks to make his movies.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King:  1008% return.
  • The Hangover (2009)  Return on investment: 1297%
  • Jaws (1975) Return on investment: 1308%
  • Star Wars (1977) Return on investment: 1938%
  • Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Return on investment: 2520%
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) Return on investment: 3172%

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley replaces Megan Fox

With the advent of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley hired to replace Megan Fox in Transformers 3, it’s been noted that she has no prior acting in her background.  Yet when I stop to think about it (code for researching this incredibly important social issue.), there are more models in the acting biz than I thought there were.

Though I’m sure the number of models that try to transcend the barrier between posing and runway careers to acting are probably much higher than anticipated, some models get a leg up on the situation by how they approach their careers, or who they work for and how much help they get from their employer.

My wife and I rented two movies from Blockbuster this past weekend.

Whoever is in charge of producing the DVD’s has now decided that we cannot skip the trailers or  commercials by hitting the DVD menu or the skip button on the DVD player remote.

They have crammed each trailer with just about every important scene from the movie. If I haven’t watched the movie yet I would prefer a teaser not a spoiler. If I have seen the movie, I’d like to skip the trailer. Also, If you rent more than one of this weeks releases you are going to see the same trailers again.

Avatar from James Cameron

With Avatar hitting the silver screen late in the year, the top-10 contenders at the movie box office had an easy run at it, sort of.  My only complaint is that the original chart does not have Avatar in it… but I can fix that!

This list is from the U.S. Movie market only… which seems short sighted, considering how much a movie can make worldwide!  For example:  Avatar should be 6th on this list.  Avatar made $232.1 million in the U.S. to date, and $637 million worldwide.

Oh, I lied about the top-10.  I snagged the top-25 from the chart!  Check out all the details after the break:

I was tooling around trying to pick up some info on some movies over on Amazon and I came across the list of top-sellers on Amazon.

It’s no surprise that The Hangover is #1, followed by Inglorious Basterds & Harry Potter and the Half Blood PrinceUp rounds out the top 5.

Check out the spread of some of the top sellers after the break:
