Like its Mumbai cousin, the 2008 independent Spanish science fiction film Sleep Dealer flew right under the radar of most Americans. I remember seeing a Sleep Dealer poster here around town. Living in LA, I wasn’t sure if it was a cable mini-series, feature film or homo erotic theater. The poster featured some dudes upper back with wires and cable ports popping out like a Borg drone. Within a few weeks the poster was gone and the film a (maybe see it on DVD) memory.
Fortunately last week I stumbled upon the Sleep Dealer DVD. Because of the cool looking alternate cover art and rareness of the film I picked it up immediately. I wasn’t sure what to expect, the region code was missing and the film’s in Spanish with English subtitles. Could this film be the science fiction Slumdog Millionaire, or a Hispanic MST3K crap-fest?
Have you ever wondered who would win a skirmish between Neo (Mr. Anderson) from The Matrix, and Robocop? As the fight progresses, a few other characters join the “debate.”

Cinema StaticDVD / Blu-ray Releases For January 12th, 2010.
This week some great films finally get their due and all three of my movie picks were limited releases. Also, I’ve decided not to list releases of older films that are being repackaged in 2 or 4 packs. There a few exceptions but I don’t want to bog down the list with too many of them.
My movie pick this week is Moon, a great Science Fiction film that never really had a chance in the theaters. Moon was brilliant and would have made its money back easily. Now finally everyone will get to see how great it really is.
Honorable mentions also go out to The Hurt Locker and In The Loop. In the Loop is the British post 9-11 comedy. Ironically I watched all three of these films in the same theater.
My TV Pick of the week is The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season that’s 20 years of Doah aaaaah, Doah!!! Amazing!
The Prisoner on AMC had a strong premiere showing. The show pulled in over 2 million viewers for its premiere. Yet the subsequent night, it barely pulled in a million pairs of eyeballs.
I think I know how AMC snagged in over 2 millions viewers. I happened to have watched their Matrix trilogy airings. Yes, I used plural. I’ve been sick and watching a lot of TV, much to my chagrin in some cases.
I think AMC plotted this premiere of The Prisoner very carefully. They aired a popular movie series and with every single commercial break, they pummeled you with at least 2 ads for The Prisoner. At least. And in EVERY COMMERCIAL BREAK. Or at least by the end of the weekend, that’s what it felt like.
I had seen so many ads that I recorded The Prisoner, looking to take a break from the show before it even started. If you like brain-teaser with a message, I’m sure you’re doing well with the show. But it gave me the feeling of LOST, but not. If that even makes sense.
Maybe Monday Night Football dinged the viewer numbers. There’s always the 7-day delayed viewer numbers that might prove otherwise to the lack of interest… even if the series is getting flogged by some reviews out. Any SoB readers catch the show? What did you think of it if you did?
