TV & Movie news & Opinion, weeding out the static

I used to track TV ratings for another organization and had let it by the wayside, but I thought I’d give it a swing and see what kind of list I could come up with because I was curious about a few shows that I watch…  And with that, I compiled a list and sorted it from most popular on down.  Wow, were there some surprises?  Not really.

Sunday Night Football on CBS takes the cake for the week of Wednesday, October 6th to Tuesday, October 12th with almost 21 million viewers.  (I’m not too focused on any specific demographic, just overall.)  Behind football is the reality TV show, Dancing With The Stars, which barely eeked out NCIS as they both pulled in 19 million viewers.  Later on down the list we have The Mentalist and Criminal Minds and such.

I’m a bit worried about CSI: Miami.  Stuffed behind football, it’s going to be a tough sell on a “school night” if it’s going to get jostled around from tentatively unstable football times.  Alex O’Loughlin’s medical drama, Three Rivers, never had a chance sitting behind football.  But CSIM has a strong following already.  Maybe it will do OK.  As far as I’m concerned, anything with over 6 million viewers is doing OK.  But the shows that I like are worrying me to some degree.

Fringe is sitting in the 60′s, sadly, it’s barely outperforming Chase.  OMG, despite Fringe actually having a pretty interesting story line going on this season, it feels fresher then it did last season.  Are we tired of X-Files-like shows?  The Vampire Diaries, though sitting in the 70′s, is kicking butt for The CW amongst that network’s shows. Smallville, in it’s tenth season, pulled in more than 2 million viewers.  But near the very bottom of the barrel of numbers, sits Stargate Universe and Caprica.

TV Premiere Listings Logo

The following list is the Summer Time Premieres for June 2010.  If you’re wondering what new TV series are premiering in June, check out this list below.  Yes, I’m a bit late… so I’ve backtracked to the beginning of the month to include what has started up in the event you didn’t know about something that has premiered and really wanted to!

The lists are sorted first by date, followed by a list sorted alphabetically (Alphabetical Link) by show title. After that is a list of selected shows (Alphabetical Snippets) where I mention what season, what’s new, etc..

Hawaii Five-O

CBS’s remake of the television classic, Hawaii Five-O, looks absolutely incredible from the video snippets I’ve just seen and am loading up here!  These are the first looks at the opening credits and they’ve replicated the feel of the original series incredibly! (Crap, did I just give an age related scenario away by saying that?)  Also, for the consummate Alex O’Loughlin fan, make sure to head down below the video previews!  I have some O’Loughlin / Three Rivers news!

Hawaii Five-O 2010

The Hawaii Five-O remake will be starring Alex O’loughlin in the lead role of Det. Steve McGarrett.  Daniel Dae Kim, fresh off of Lost, as Det. Chin Ho Kelly could be finding himself in a 2nd hit TV series.  Grace Park has retired as a Cylon from Battlestar Galactica and is playing Kona Kalakaua and it seems she still is kicking butt.  Scott Caan as Dano.  Writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Fringe, Transformers, Star Trek) will be creating episode material for this cast.  What a wonderful proposition all of this brings.

CBS has pulled Three Rivers starring Alex O’Loughlin from the lineup effective December 6th.  In it’s place they’ll be airing repeats of Criminal Minds and NCIS: Los Angeles.

All 13 episodes of Three Rivers will be filmed but CBS is being mum on whether they’ll be airing the remaining episodes or not.

This despite pulling in just under 8 million viewers.  I think <8 mil viewers isn’t bad considering that CBS has been snapping the show around in different time slots as football shoves the start time back to later than normal on some nights and then swapping hours with another show so that Three Rivers airs later.

Viewers like consistency and we didn’t get that with the air times.

Then should I go on about the first 2 episodes being swapped around in some daft-minded move that has the cast meeting for the first time in the 2nd episode to air?

This whole debacle has been handled with kid-gloves and Three Rivers has not really been given a fighting chance.

If anyone was wondering if I watched Three Rivers last night, in a word, no.

I love Mandy Patinkin’s work.  I love Alex O’Loughlin’s work.  The ads for the episode looked incredibly touching.  I’m trying to like Three Rivers, but I have to take a moment, step back and say,

Hey, the consultants for Three Rivers need to be replaced.

Why?

ALS patients cannot donate organs because so little is known about ALS and it’s threat to organ recipients.  My wife’s mother wanted to donate her organs, but was denied that request, due to having ALS.  It was irresponsible of the show to not do their research about the illness; therefore I did not watch this Three Rivers episode.  It’s upsetting to think that they are putting information out there about this devastating disease that is incorrect.

It’s as simple as that and the consultants overlooked this aspect of the story and it’s a massive shame on them.

ALS patients who are interested, can donate postmortem tissue for study & research to help further the discovery of this cause if this life robbing and cruel malady.

Check for the THREE RIVERS special viewing-time alert at the end of this article.

First, lets dip into the history of the show…  the name Three Rivers comes from a heart transplant hospital in Pittsburgh.

It’s a show about an incredible option and opportunity for many in the real world who need transplants and it’s a subject that you don’t see often enough in the media.

Three Rivers , starring Alex O’Loughlin, looks like it’s helping in that regard.

Of course, when your show is up against Desperate Housewives, just how much coverage can you get?

The ratings for the Alex O’Loughlin medical drams, Three Rivers, hasn’t been looking too good.  In fact the numbers dropped from the premiere to the 2nd episode.

I’d like to think that the debacle where CBS swapped episodes has something to do with this, but I’m not sure.

With CBS being quick to slice the excess when shows perform poorly, and TV By The Numbers expects the show to get the axe anytime soon.

That’s a bummer, but to be a bit realistic, I didn’t see anything coming from Alex that really said WOW to me, in the acting department.

The creators of Three Rivers gave him a role that didn’t ask for him to show what he can really do, and that pissed me off. (Sorry…)  because he can deliver incredible performances.

Check out TV By The Numbers forthe theory on where Three Rivers is going.

Three Rivers Logo invI previously noted that CBS swapped the first two episodes of Three Rivers.  Creative reasons and all that.

When I reported this, I presumed the episodes could stand out on their own.  What I just saw completely surprised me.

The complete and unprofessional presentation of the 2nd episode that was originally slated to be the pilot episode just barreled past the completely stupid.

Three Rivers medical drama TV series on CBS

Being an Alex O’Loughlin fan, I was very much looking forward to the premiere of Three Rivers, starring Alex O’Loughlin.  I sat down and tuned in, geared up and ready to go.

What I was met with was a show that tested my patience with my approach to new shows and the warning signs were there.

Alex O’Loughlin didn’t give me anything different than what I saw in Moonlight and that disappointed me.  After what I saw him do in his guest appearance in Criminal Minds, I bet this wasn’t his doing.

Opening scenes and character introductions were lame.  I consider it lame when they write, or squeeze in descriptors of characters into the dialog so we would know their backgrounds of sorts, almost instantly.

I applaud them for tossing us into the story-mix of multiple stories for this premiere episode that wasn’t, (I’ll explain that in a bit) but I think there were too many stories happening and not enough character depth for any of them.

I know many Alex O’Loughlin fans are probably looking forward to the October 4th premiere of CBS’s Three Rivers.  Did you also know that CBS swapped up the opening epi’s?

Alex O'Loughlin.

Now the premiere epi of Three Rivers will be titled “Place of Life,” the 2nd episode will be titled “Tick-Tock.”  Originally, Tick Tock was going to be the premiere.  Who cares, right?  It’s O’loughlin!

CBS press on the show:
