This week the list of new DVD and Blu-ray releases include a lot of Blu-ray titles and TV shows.

New Movies & TV Shows on DVD and Blu-ray

In conjunction with Disney’s movie theater re-release, there is, amongst other titles, a new set of packaging for The Lion King for the Home Entertainment market!  Beyond the lion, we are getting ourselves some Vin Diesel & Dwayne Johnson action in the surprise action movie, Fast Five.  We’re also seeing a first time release to Blu-ray with writer/director Quentin Tarantino‘s Pulp Fiction.

If you waited for the boxed set of the entire series, then you’re in luck if that TV show is Friday Night Lights!   And season 1 of AMC’s The Walking Dead is hitting shelves also.

Green Lantern DVD!

Green Lantern on DVD and Blu-rayThis week we also see the initial release of the extended cut of Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds.  This is the movie fans of the franchise loved, but movie fans in general wretched from seeing.  But judging from how far down I had to dig to find the title in a list of titles sorted by sales stats, I’m guessing there aren’t enough fans to bring this bad boy up near the top of the heap.  Green Lantern pre-sales seem to even be beat by a few Pee Wee Herman titles.  My unprofessional observation is telling me they need to pump this up as best they can for initial sales numbers!

Transformers 3 DVD Warning Note

Transformers 3Transformers 3 (Dark of the Moon) came out on DVD & Blu-ray last Friday.  As a renegade amateur consumer advocate, I have to say beware!!!

The version that came out was the movie only disc.  No extras, no interviews, no nuthin.  When I popped in my DVD version in my DVD player, my only options included ‘play,’ ‘select chapter,’ and ‘setup.’  If you like to spend your money on packages with extras, you’re either going to have to wait.  If you’re anxious to own, then you’ll be popping bucks on both.  Personally, I think it’s a crap tactic and I wish they would release a movie in all options during the first week.  Period.

But we have to remind ourselves that they wouldn’t do this if it didn’t work and enough people didn’t spring for both.

This reminds me of my COMCAST VoD service…  when a movie comes out for its first week of rental, well, cool!  But then a few weeks later you then see the director’s cut or extended version cut show up in the menu.  Boo.

I do my damndest to never double-dip.  It doesn’t feel fair how some of these media outlets take advantage of your enthusiasm for a franchise!

I’m off my soap box, here’s a list of new DVD releases that’s coming out this week.

The Incredible Hulk movie poster

The Incredible Hulk (2008), starring Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt and more, is actually something of a surprise for me.  The screenplay is written by Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, X2 ) and directed by Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans, Transporter franchise; upcoming:  Wrath of the Titans).

When I first saw The Incredible Hulk back in 2008, I was a different kind of movie-goer.  I was all about the green.  All I wanted to do was see the mean, green man in action.  But I just happen to be catching the movie on TV tonight and I’m finding myself impressed and drawn in with the human struggles that Dr. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is experiencing.

Today, I’m a different movie watcher and this time around I’m appreciating the human struggle.  (Crap, I’m growing up!)

Back in 2005, John Gertz Prods (JGP) had purchased the rights to the novel “The Interview Room.”  The book is about a shrink who is an expert at figuring out when folks are lying.

JGP turned that into a screenplay and they called it Lie to Lie.

In 2007 they presented their premise to Fox for a pilot and a few subsequent episodes, but Fox supposedly declined.

Then in 2009, Fox premiered their Tim Roth starrer, Lie To Me.

JPG is suing Fox for breach of confidence and for developing an incredibly similar premise.

Fox Network

Tis the week of orders, cancellations and series renewals!  We’ve already seen that Fox has renewed Human Target with Mark Valley; and renewed Lie to Me starring Tim Roth.  Fox has also ordered some new shows for next season.

They’ve ordered the police drama RideAlong, which is about a rogue cowboy cop and a female police chief.  The other drama they’ve ordered is based in Texas called Midland, but may eventually be called Lone Star.  Midland is about a con man in the oil industry.

Right off the bat, RideAlong smells like Castle, that stars Nathan Fillion… A non-cop paired up with a female cop.  How many episodes do you give it before they build up the sexual tension?  Sorry, I’m a biased reporter!  To see more of what comedies and such that Fox ordered, check out THR

Lie To Me with Tim Roth

If you’re a fan of Lie To Me, hang on to your hats!  Lie to Me has been renewed for a 3rd season! (Tim?  You can put your hands down now!  You’ve been renewed!)

The Tim Roth starrer will probably get a 13 episode order in this series renewal.  The other thing to be aware of is that the showrunner whose been with the show, Shawn Ryan, has left, so there may be a few creative changes or subtleties in the presentation.

We’ll see!

The last episode aired for Lie To Me, starring Tim Roth, was titled “Black Friday,” and I found this episode, for me, to be one of the best they’ve had in this season.

Lie To Me really hasn’t gelled with me but I watch it because there’s nothing else that catches my eye.  Most episodes have me coming away not thrilled and yet not disappointed.

“Black Friday” was awesome for me because I liked how the 2 cases they took on were directly relatable to the general populace that didn’t have anything to do with people or organizations out of reach.  In other words, last Monday, I could relate to their issues.  I could wrap my mind around the subjects.

With the store having the Lightman Group help defend themselves against what appeared to be a frivolous case, and then to have them discover just who was at fault, was one of those ‘Visa’ priceless moments.  And we got a taste for the high level of ethics the group as a whole represents when they turned away a 7 figure payday because it was not the truth.

The heart wrench for the week, heck maybe for the month was Max’s story and how Lightman helped him search for his parents.
