At one point, I was feeling pretty good for Tom Welling because even though his Smallville role had flown the coup, he was still employed with his executive producer’s stint with Hellcats on The CW.

But alas, such is not the case as The CW has ended up canceling the cheerleader drama.

Albeit, cheerleaders are probably a decent shoe-in with some demographics, apparently it needed a bit more story to keep the Nielsen Rating numbers up there to make it an acceptable keeper.

On the other hand, One Tree Hill and Nikita have been given the nod for an additional season.  One Tree Hill will only have a 13-episode season though.

No spoilers in this front section of my Smallville recap and review:

SMALLVILLE

It is here.  The moment we’ve all been looking forward to and dreading, all at once.  Through the highs and some of the lows, this is what it comes down to, the series finale of Smallville on The CW.  The episode much heralded by many websites throughout the last few months.

This final episode of Smallville was 90% pretty damn good.  The story took care of many of the open stories and we got to see many past characters/actors.  We didn’t see Pete, (Sam Jones III) because ["In October 2009, he was arrested by the DEA on charges of drug trafficking, with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute.TMZ]  His loss.

'Smallville' - The Superman Symbol in Clark's Eye

The story in this final episode was good enough to keep me from being sad that this was the last ever new episode of Smallville.  The last twenty minutes had many recap images of the previous ten years and it was then I started realizing how sad I was becoming that this was it.  No more upcoming scenes.

FROM HERE ON OUT, SPOILERS are in this Smallville recap and review:

The series finale of Smallville is airing tonight in a 2-hour finale on The CW that promises to be a very exciting television event for the fans.  Despite some lows in story, there have also been some highs and through it all, we’ve stuck by the show.  Having started with the series, watching it for so long, how can you not see it through?

Via Smallville, on The CW we’ve been introduced to the vision of a reimagined Superman originally conceived and brought to us by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.  Over the last 10 years we’ve been introduced to Tom Welling, Allison Mack, Kristen Kreuk, Michael Rosenbaum, Erica Durance, Justin Hartley and many many more.

By ‘introduced’ I mean brought to our attention, not necessarily first time to TV.

Yes, he runs for a phone booth too!

Tom Welling has become a producer and other cast have come to be a part of our awareness as we start to follow them in other ventures.  The most popular of the cast could very well be Michael Rosenbaum.

Through the last ten years, we’ve cried for the series to break the rules of ‘no tights’ but we’ve come to learn they had other legal obligations they had to operate by.  We’ve never seen Batman or Wonder Woman or The Flash, but we’ve seen other characters or representations of these characters in different ways.

"Smallville" on The CW Network, starring Tom Welling

It was what it was! Only a few episodes of Smallville on The CW are left and we had to deal with Zod and a powerless Clark Kent!  Having thought we’ve seen the last of Zod, it was surprising and worrisome all at once. With Clark and Oliver headed willingly into the phantom zone, it was daring, even for our yellow sun powered hero.

Yet in they went. This time around, I enjoyed Callum Blue‘s portrayal of Smallville‘s Zod. It seemed different and to me, a more enjoyable version. He had a different edge to himself this time around. Less sneering, more glaring looks or something like that.

The altercation that erupted between Clark and Oliver was quite Spartacus-like. The entire gladitorial scenario reminded me of a a toned down Starz Spartacus. The fight choreography wasn’t bad either.

"Smallville" on The CW Network, starring Tom Welling

The end is nigh for Smallville, as the series finale is fast approaching. Too fast for my taste, but so be it. For a genre TV series such as Smallville, this was a terrific run, a run of ten years is awesome.  Today fans of the show are getting a double dose of previews.  One is the first look at Superman‘s red and blue suit.  The suit that Clark Kent is destined to wear as the Man of Steel .  We’ll also be seeing Laura Vandervoort in the same episode.  The other series preview is catching our preview glimpse of Michael Rosenbaum reprising his role of Lex Luthor.

Seriously, I think they’re banking on all of Smallville‘s fans NOT having any kind of heart condition!

First up are the preview images of the suit from the episode titled “Prophecy.”  We first saw glimpses of the suit earlier in the season… I put this image of the suite up way back in September of 2010:

But newer images were released by The CW today, Friday, April 22nd.  Check it out:

Michael RosenbaumMichael Rosenbaum has filmed his final scenes for the finale of Smallville.  He filmed it already though the show had not settled in to film the final episode, but they catered to Mr. Rosenbaum’s crazy schedule and shot his scenes earlier than everyone else’s.

Michael Rosenbaum said his final scenes with Tom Welling were excellent.  He shot for 19 hours to get his scenes in the can, with his bald cap in place.

In the Zap2It article he touched a bit on why he had not previously returned to the series, he first said he thought they had wrapped up the Lex Luthor story, but then he indicated the following:

Michael RosenbaumMichael Rosenbaum gave the Courier Press a bit of insight to his return appearance to the series finale of Smallville, now that he’s changed his mind and is returning to the show that literally put him on many fans’ maps.

On May 13th, we’ll be watching the series finale of Smallville and Mr. Rosenbaum, at the pleas from his minions of fans, has decided to return reprising the role of Lex Luthor, Clark Kent’s (Tom Welling) biggest and classic nemesis.

Mr. Rosenbaum said that the fans made the show and that with all the new followers he generated, he felt that he needed to return, for them.

But in regards to the role of Lex Luthor and being bald, he’ll be donning a bald cap and not cutting his hair. He’s in other projects that require his having hair and it takes forever to grow his hair back.

You’ll be seeing Michael Rosenbaum in Fox’s Christian Slater starrer, Breaking In, and working on his own projects like Saved by Zeroes & GHILD.
