torchwood

I’ve been watching The latest season, season 4, of Torchwood, called Torchwood: Miracle Day.  When it came to Starz, I was pretty excited about getting ten episodes of what I felt, could be impressive television.  But have my expectations seem to have been skewed too high?

The last season of Torchwood, Children of Earth, was the very best television I felt I had ever watched.  The story was succint in plot and touched on the past, present and implications to the future of the Torchwood organization.  All while still managing to threaten the very existence of Earth.

Along the way a few story lines hit strong emotional anchors.  Whether they were good or questionable, it didn’t matter.  The events pulled at the core of the TV viewers heart.

Hence, the strong anticipation I had for Torchwood: Miracle Day.  And though I’m being a loyal Torchwood fan, I’m not necessarily feeling it this time around.

Below are my Comic Con panel terse recaps for Torchwood, Eureka, Warehouse 13 & True Blood.

"Comic Con" News

-

Torchwood

In the Torchwood panel at Comic Con, the panel consisted of John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman, Alexa Havins and writer Jane Espenson.

The panel had a bunch of levity and was a nice experience of laughter. But to look at the specific points made in the panel about the show:

Espenson said things will be getting darker as the Torchwood: Miracle Day progresses.

Espenson wants the fans to really embrace the theme of this season and look at the bigger picture of the effects from Miracle Day.

No word on renewal yet.

Eureka

The Comic Con Eureka panel guests included cast members Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Neil Grayston and Felicia Day. Also on-panle were executive producers Jamie Paglia and Bruce Miller. The panel was moderated by Wil Wheaton.

They chatted about Eureka‘s new space program, a love triangle and the animated Christmas special coming up.

Here, they chatted about things like how Day found it easy to fit into the cast.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield will be directing the episode titled “Omega Girls.”

And this year’s Christmas episode will be an animated ‘sode, with multiple styles of animation.

Other than that, it was just a fun experience…especially when the entire audience sang happy birthday to Colin Ferguson. (Yes, they said it was his birthday.)

Oh, on that love-triangle? There will be some tension between Dr. Holly Martin (Day), Dr. Parrish (Wheaton) and Fargo (Grayston).

As advertised, Torchwood: Miracle Day is about a day when no one on Earth can die, but that’s not the fantasy, healthy and strong kind of not-dying, but rather, the “you live with your mortal wound and continue to live” kind of immortality.  Whether you’ve been blown up, skewered, had a heart attack…  Folks aren’t indestructible, just undying.  So you don’t die and it turns out, that’s not good.

In this first premiere episode of Torchwood, the scene is established, characters are introduced and the premise of the problem is presented to the TV viewer.

Our first victims of not-dying are CIA agent Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer) and pedophile and murderer Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman).  Matheson has a car accident that should have ended him and Danes was given a lethal injection via execution for his crimes.  Well, that was the plan.

As humanity becomes slowly aware of the problem, we then meet Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), whose now a mother and the little tyke she lugs around is the cutest little button.  Always seeming to be having a big smile on her face when guns are in play.  Don’t worry, mom puts ear-muffs on the litte one before shooting at things.

And of course, there’s Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).

Sam Huntington, Meaghan Rath and Sam Witwer in Being HumanIf you’re wondering about Syfy‘s version of Being Human, production for the second season will begin this month (July) in Montreal and is looking to air sometime in 2012.  I’m sure Syfy will let us know exactly when it will return.  It’s their style to let us know within a few weeks before it’s due to air.

But what’s sounding like other good news is that Dichen Lachman (Dollhouse) will be joining the Syfy series as the character Izumi, a very old vampire who shows up in Boston, whose royalty amongst the vampires.

Her showing up with throw everything into a bit of discord!

Sounds cool, I’ve enjoyed seeing Lachman in Dollhouse and even her one-spots in Hawaii Five-O, not to mention watching her in the upcoming Torchwood series in Starz.

John Barrowman fr 2009 Comic-ConWith the advent of Torchwood: Miracle Day premiering on STARZ on July 8th, fans of the franchise can’t help but wonder, what with John Barrowman again reprising his role of Captain Jack Harkness, if there could be a chance if he might once again reprise that very same role in the new Doctor Who series with Matt Smith.

Yea… that would be pretty nice, wouldn’t it? Believe it or not, the idea has actually been brought up in the hallways and back rooms of the show-runners of Doctor Who & Torchwood, or so John Barrowman has teased the world.

Barrowman has indicated that both Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat have chatted about bringing back Harkness. Since Jack showed up in that swan song scene with David Tennant, the thought has stuck in their craw.

Barrowman has publicly made it known that he’d return to Doctor Who at the drop of a hat!  Whether it being in the cards will actually make it a reality is a totally different matter.

'Torchwood Miracle Day' Key Art image001A new promo video for Starz/BBC’s Torchwood: Miracle Day series is coming up…

First, if you’re not familiar with the Torchwood franchise, it’s a spin-off from Doctor Who and is about a covert team from what’s known as the Torchwood Institute.  The Institute ends up scavenging alien technology during the course of their duties as they are the ones called up to deal alien threats posed to Earth.  An elite task force that is separate from the government, outside the auspices of the police, and beyond the control of the United Nations.

With that said, for those who are familiar with the franchise, we’ve moved on beyond the last mini-series, Children of Earth and today we have Torchwood: Miracle Day, a day when everyone stops dying.  The cast includes John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Lauren Ambrose and Bill Pullman.

For folks new to the franchise, you do not need to have seen previous renditions of Torchwood to be in-the-know. It’s very easy to jump into the franchise, so if you’re brave enough, go for it.  I’d recommend it.

For fans, Miracle Day will be taking place several months after the team disbanded back at the end of Children of Earth.  Now, without the backing of the organization, with all their equipment having been destroyed, they have to figure out how to deal with the menace they face now, even if it means facing off against the system.

In the trailer below, notice that as the deaths decline, the birth numbers start to increase like mad?   If you really think that not being able to die is a good thing, think again.
