The Super Bowl 46The 46th annual NFL Super Bowl will be taking place on Sunday, February 5th, 2012, culminating the 2011 NFL season.  Kickoff time is slated for 6:25pm EST.  That, pretty much most red-blooded men know.

But are you ready for the TV commercials that cost on average, $3.5M per 30 second spot?

-

It’s that time of year again…  the playoffs are here, and soon the Super Bowl 46 will be on those big screens.

When all is said and done, after “the best of the best of the best*” tackle each other in the Super Bowl, “There can be only one!*”  One winner.  One Super Bowl champion.  (They call them world champions, but I think they’re getting a bit liberal with that term!)

But prior to the Super Bowl, the game itself takes a backseat to something more important, and that’s the TV commercials between sets and quarters.

The TV ads that play during the Super Bowl have become a fascinating focus of both the fans and the media.  And it’s such a hot bed of business that by May of 2011, NBC had already sold half the TV commercial spots available.

The Ads Were Fun When We Were Surprised

Fans used to love the ads and because we made such a fervor about them, the media and the advertisers have taken advantage of that mentality.

New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

This week the new movies coming out in movie theaters on Friday, October 14th include actors such as Milla Jovovich, Dexter Fletcher, Rowan Atkinson, Katie Featherston, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Gillian Anderson and such in new movies this week.

Looking at this collective, I’m not sure if there’s any threat to Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman except maybe Paranormal Activity 3.  Maybe even the remake of Footloose will either start to contend with Steel, considering how close their box office battle looked last weekend… or flop horribly and go away.  Then again, maybe we’ll be surprised if folk flock to the 3D showing of The Three Musketeers!

In this list of new movies, first up,

The Three Musketeers

Director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil franchise) called this redo/remake the version for this generation, because every generation needs their own version of this classic tale, except of course, it’s filmed in 3D, stars his wife Milla Jovovich, along with Matthew Macfadyen as Athos, Luke Evans as Aramis, Ray Stevenson as Porthos and Logan Lerman as D’Artagnan… The outline says

“The hot-headed young D’Artagnan along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war. “

Paranormal Activity 3

Paranormal Activity 3 movie promo

Directed by Henry Joost (Catfish) & Ariel Schulman (Catfish), the cast includes Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden reprising their roles with Chloe Csengery & Jessica Tyler Smith as their younger versions in the prequel to the Paranormal Activity franchise.

PA3 takes us back to 1988 to see when and how the creepy-fest all began….

Again, new folk are helming this third chapter of fright.  I’m guessing Paramount Pictures is looking to keep costs down, so they’re turning to new folk.  The producers include the man behind the original Paranormal Activity, Oren Peli.

NOTE: This is the first movie trailer… the newest movie clips coming out seem to be scene spoilers, and I’d rather be surprised rather than sit in a new movie looking for clips I know are coming… (It’s just me, but I’m that way.)

New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

This week the new movies coming out on Friday, October 14th  include favorite actors such as

  • Antonio Banderas
  • Camilla Belle
  • Chloë Grace Moretz
  • Heather Graham
  • Jack Black
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan
  • Jessica Chastain
  • Joel Edgerton
  • Julianne Hough
  • Kenny Wormald
  • Kevin Spacey
  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead
  • Nicolas Cage
  • Nicole Kidman
  • Owen Wilson
  • Rosamund Pike
  • Sam Worthington

Just to name a few.

Oh, hey, Michael Rosenbaum fans…  keep your eye out for his name with one of the movies below!

As far as box office top-10 contenders, there might be one or two movies that might give Real Steel a run for its money!  I can’t predict what movie-goers will flock to, but I’m going to guess that The Thing might pull some shape-shifting weight during the weekend to give the robot fighting drama movie a good bout in the ring.

-

Movies Opening Friday, Oct 14th:
-

•      The Thing

This is a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter movie, The Thing, starring Kurt Russell.  In the first movie, it, the alien, had already had its way with another camp before it moved in to the camp that we watched events take place in.

In this prequel of the same name, we’re looking at the discovery of the alien ship and the distinction of how different people react to it.  Some stay fast on their course of study up in the ice, while others focus on the alien.

Come on!  Who wouldn’t focus on the alien?

Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., whose sporadic resume does not instill enthusiasm, the cast of this film includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein.

The Thing is distributed by Universal Pictures.

•      Footloose

This movie looks like, and this is just my observation from the trailer, but a completely unoriginal remake.  The previews look almost exactly like the original… scenes and heck, even the clothes in the trailer remind me of the original.  But we’ll see how well its received at the box office.

Directed by and co-written by Craig Brewer (Black Snake Moan, Hustle & Flow),  the cast includes Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell & Miles Teller.

Footloose is from Paramount Pictures.

"Comic Con" News

The upcoming 2011 San Diego Comic Con, which takes place starting July 20th and running through July 24th is a bit of a game changer this year.  For one, a few movie studios said they weren’t’ showing up this year.  I want to emphasize that they “said” they  weren’t.  I keep hearing rumors to the contrary but I’m not saying anything until I see the actual news or press releases concerning surprise appearances!  To some extent, I get it though.  Studios can dump a huge amount of money into marketing the Comic Con event and then the movies crash and burn, comparatively speaking.

Or maybe the wrong movies were viral marketed.  Who knows.  But for now, what the absence of some studios means is that Hall H is now open for other venues of entertainment, such as television productions.  Now TV studios can get a hand-hold on that huge 5,000 seat auditorium and pack in the TV crowd, or, maybe there might be just a little bit more room to sit than Ballroom 20 used to afford.

With that said, looking over the 4-day schedule of Comic Con‘s two most infamous rooms, I see some sneak peek pilot airings, I see popular TV series, some movies from Sony, 20th Century Fox, DC Entertainment, Paramount Entertainment, Relativity Media and much more.

Director/Execituve Producer Jon Favreau arrives at the world wide premiere of "Iron Man 2" Premiere held at the El Capitan Theatre

Director/Execituve Producer Jon Favreau arrives at the world wide premiere of "Iron Man 2" Premiere held at the El Capitan Theatre

For personalities, there are a few scheduled for the big rooms:  Jon Favreau, Guillermo del Toro, Francis Ford Coppola, Dan Deacon and the ever verbally colorful Kevin Smith!  I would always recommend catching Jon Favreau when he speaks.  I have never walked away from any event with him in it and not learned some incredible inside perspective on the industry when he talks.  He’s like ‘the people’s director’ and fills us in!  He talks to the crowds and entertains.  It’s great and I look forward to catching what he has to say!

And most panel Q&A’s will have major talent attending.

So check out the Comic Con sched below for these two huge rooms and tell me what you think you’d like to catch!  Me, I need to clone myself because I have no ‘Agents of Cinema Static‘ (that are going) and there are good things in both rooms on all days.  Also for more details, see the site itself for more, much, much more on details.

Vin Diesel in 'Fast Five'

This is a Cinema Static movie review of Fast Five.

I have a huge problem with Fast Five and that’s the fact that they pit my two favorite action heroes against each other in the same, most awesome popcorn movie to come out in a long time!

Did I mention I liked the movie?

Fast Five from Universal Pictures, is directed by Justin Lin and stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker & Dwayne Johnson, amongst a great cast of other characters.

Fast Five has kick started the summer movie season in a fashion like the season should always be started… with a bang!  With just a little bit of your belief system disengaged, this movie can definitely be one of the funnest movie experiences you can have, if this is your cup of tea.

-

The movie opens with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) getting convicted and put on a bus to Lompoc prison, with no chance of early parole.  But the gang has other plans.  And then the most beautiful scene this movie watcher could see took place, and that was my two favorite classic cars in the same scene, a 1970 Dodge Charger /RT and a 1978 Pontiac Firebird, coming up on the prison bus, to break Dom out.

Dwayne Johnson in 'Fast Five'After four movies under the franchise, I wasn’t sure how the public would take to a fifth movie based around the premise that was fun to watch at the box office.  But Fast Five has sent a message in a big way this weekend with the numbers it pulled in so far!  Wow…

Fast Five just gave Universal Pictures its best performing opening weekend, ever, and it pulled in an amazing $83 million domestically.  Overseas, it pulled in an additional $45 million.  These numbers are helping people in the industry tout the end to the box office slump.

When I saw Fast Five was coming out, I was worried that its previous renditions of the Fast and Furious franchise would dampen the enthusiasm of movie-goers.  People I know were questioning if they should go see it or not.  I was excited about the premise of two huge action heroes in each, their own right, facing off.

But despite my trepidations about the franchise, I didn’t thing that, or I didn’t count on the mix of Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel facing off against each other.  I think this says a lot about the two actors together.  It’s like the ultimate match up.

And then we add to the two stars, the collective movie reviews from different venues were giving the movie thumbs up… over 70% of the professional reviews out there were saying the movie was a good experience.

Now my prediction in my last weekly new movies at the box office article, was that it would “Probably making its money back at the box office.  The question is just how long that may take.

I now know.  That would be one weekend, if you look at their estimated production costs of around $125-$150 million.  Good job to the team ensemble of Universal Pictures, Dwayne Johnson, director Justin Lin and writer Chris Morgan.

Thor

'Thor' - Chris Hemsworth PL012_

ThorThor opened in movie theaters?  Well, yes, but before you snap, it opens here at the U.S. box office this Friday, May 6th, but it’s been in the theaters overseas now for a few weeks.

If you’re wondering if Thor is any good, the Marvel Studios, Paramount Pictures distributed movie starring Chris Hemsworth pulled in $83 million overseas.

I think that says much towards this Norse God character.  I’ve seen some overseas reviews and they’re pretty much behind the movie.  The usually frumpy gang over at Rotten Tomatoes has it at a 94%, Empire.com gives it 4 out of 5 stars.   BEWARE, the review seems pretty spoilery if you don’t like knowing the story before you get to the theater.

-

After Credits Goodies

Now anyone who has seen a Marvel character based movie knows there will be a itty bitty little nugget that roles after the credits.

SO we presume there’s something at the end of Thor

But.

Did you stick around for the credits after Fast Five?  Uh huh, now I’m betting you wish you had.  I’ve heard that there’s something there for the patient fans who didn’t bolt right away!

'Fast Five' promo movie posterIt seems that Fast Five is doing pretty good in overseas markets.  So well that Universal Pictures is already looking at a sixth rendition of the franchise and Universal is looking to change the underlying premise of the franchise from cars to heists.

They’re calling this latest release, Fast Five, a transitional story, where the focus will change from the ‘car culture’ and meld it into an action franchise going into the next film, which the studio has referred to as Fast Six.

With the next film looking to revolve around a huge robbery, the transition into the next film will be via a bit of a cliffhanger in Fast Five.

On the bright side, I’m hoping a heist will involve more cool cars.  That and we will also be seeing Dwayne Johnson again in the next film.  He wanted to be in the franchise and approached the studio about it.  That’s sweet news.

Dragonriders of Pern

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that David Hayter (Watchmen, X-Men, X2) is writing a screenplay based on the “Dragonriders of Pern” book series, working on Dragonflight, the first book of the series that’s been written by Anne McCaffrey. It will be a live action project. At least that is the plan right now.

David Hayter hopes for the project to see the light of day sometime in 2012.

This has to be some sweet set of news!

Transporter: The Series

In case no one has confirmed the news, (I had not specifically seen the news itself), I thought I’d toss out the confirmation that Joseph Mallozzi IS working on Transporter: The Series.

He mentions it in his own blog where he talks about his dogs, his food and some snippets of real news, on his projects.

EuropaCorp produced TV series, Transporter: The Series is based on the movies of the same name which starred Jason Staitham. Back in February we mentioned that twelve episodes were on order.

If you’re keeping on top of the latest trailers from Jon Favreau‘s latest movie project, Cowboys & Aliens, be apprised my dear reader, that the latest and greatest movie trailer, or TV spot will showing up will be during Thursday’s telecast of American Idol on Fox.

WonderCon Roberto Orci and Jon Favreau COWBOYS and ALIENS P4027139

In a sound-byte, I love how Jon Favreau explains why audiences are being drawn to Cowboys & Aliens… aside from the cast of Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford that is:

“it’s one of the few films this summer that’s not a sequel, or a super hero film,…and also not in 3D.”

He specifically points out, as he did in the panel at WonderCon that it is not in 3D. He’s a man of the people, that’s for sure.
