watchmen

DC Entertainment landed a press release in my inbox at around 5:30 A.M. today (Feb 1, 2012) announcing a series of prequel comic titles based on the Watchmen franchise, called “Before Watchmen.”  Check out the thoughts and details we have on it, here from the Cinema Static column on Brusimm.

Watchmen movie and comic book series

The 2009 Watchmen film, to me, is a wonderfully detailed and gritty movie that takes a look behind the scenes of what it’s like to be a vigilante superhero.  It took a look at their lives behind the scenes and introduced us to the idea that not all heroes are perfect.  They have their…   issues.

Working in an alternate timeline did not hurt the movie at all, but rather, helped the movie going world become a part of what was built up within the franchise of the Watchmen to gain a better foothold on fans’ imaginations.

(And yes, I’m not mentioning the comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons that came out in 1986/87 that was the source of the movie, Watchmen, because I never read it.  My only exposure to the franchise is via the Warner Bros. Pictures movie that was directed by Zack Snyder, and starred Jackie Earle Haley & Jeffrey Dean Morgan, amongst many.

Watchmen Prequel Comic News!

WatchmenNews on the street from Bleeding Cool is that there will be a set of prequels coming out to the ever-popular DC comic title of Watchmen.

It will be four miniseries, all prequels.

-

And that’s all the news that’s fit to print…

If this is done right, this could mean more movies, probably origin movies.  But it HAS to be done right.  They have a lot to live up to from the original Watchmen story.

It was a great, well done movie and graphic novel that won awards.

That’s a lot to live up to indeed.  Good luck DC Comics!!!

You might want to check out what more Bleeding Cool has on the Watchmen Prequels they’re breaking…

Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach in WatchmenWatchmen has been playing on HBO and I’ve watched the Zack Snyder directed movie a few times now.  It’s a wonderfully detailed story interjected with superhero action.  If you approach this movie with the right mindset, it’s a great movie with a rewarding slow burn of a story that gives you a developing story interspersed with backstory.

Zack Snyder did a good job keeping with the award winning Watchmen graphic novel’s intent and tone.

But here’s one thing that has had me wondering, and that’s why or how does Rorschach’s mask inkblots move?

It turns out that the fabric that Rorschach uses to make his mask came from material from a dress for a character that Dr. Manhattan had designed.  The material uses two pressure and heat-sensitive liquids that are suspended between layers of latex.  This creates the shifting  black-on-white color patterns we see on Rorschach’s face.

Cool.  Now we know.

Syfy ChannelThe Syfy Channel unleashes Red: Werewolf Hunter & Monsterwolf!  October is the month of Halloween (technically) and what better network than the Syfy Channel with their huge inventory of Saturday Night flicks and new Saturday Original Movies can go nuts with scary monster movies?  OK, there are a few that go all out, but still, with enough popcorn and time, you have to admit the B-movie fare from Syfy can be entertaining!

With that said, the NBC owned Syfy Channel is coming at us with two Saturday Original movies for what they call a “howling good time.”

MONSTERWOLF -- Syfy Original Movie

The first movie of note is called Monsterwolf, premiering on Saturday, October 9th and stars Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe) and Jason London.  In Monsterwolf, an evil oil company disregards rules against drilling on tribal land and their own deeds unleash a nasty, protective animal spirit, called the Kachinawaya.

After so many months of games and puzzles, Super 8 cast found its first 2 members.  Vulture reports that sources close to the project that Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Elle Fanning (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

There are no additional details on their roles or other movie details.  J.J. AbramsBad Robot & Paramount Pictures have been pretty mum about the details, except that Abrams has tried to sooth movie goers curiosities and tell them that Super 8 is not a sequel to the shaky-cam movie, Cloverfield.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan at WonderCon 2010

For the consummate Jeffrey Dean Morgan fan, I thought you’d want to know that he will start filming his next movie next month, called The Courier.

The Courier is an action flick about a courier (Morgan) who has a reputation for never missing a delivery and taking on those improbable and dangerous delivery assignments.  In this instance, the courier is asked to deliver a briefcase to a crime boss who is pretty tough to find.

Hmm…

The Courier is directed by Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now, Stories on Human Rights); screenplay by Michael Brandt & Derek Haas. Both writers have Wanted, 3:10 to Yuma & 2 Fast 2 Furious on their resume.

SUCKER PUNCH - Babydoll, played by Emily Browning

Babydoll, played by Emily Browning

I haven’t been paying too much attention to Sucker Punch until now, so here goes my bit:

About Sucker Punch

-

It is about a girl named Babydoll, played by Emily Browning, who lives with her abusive father and her younger sister.   One night Babydoll witnesses her father murder her sister. He has her committed to an insane asylum to get her lobotomized in the hopes of erasing her memory of the murder. Baby Doll meets other girls who have all found ways to survive their imprisonment.  Babydoll tries to get the other girls together to escape, in hopes of avoiding her lobotomy.   It’s been said that escape is more in the mind of the girl as Snyder is tricky in how he defines it and delivers different levels of reality and fantasy. [As explained rather lucidly by HitFix. ]
