War for Planet of the Apes review

War for the Planet of the Apes is an amazing story of evolution, family, fate, love, disloyalty, guilt and revenge.

War for the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steven Zahn, Judy Greer and a bunch others in a film wonderfully directed by Matt Reeves. But how do I really feel about it?

Minor spoilers ensue.

Planet of the Apes films on Amazon.

In the first act, we are given a quick recap of the last two movies, events leading up to this third prequel film. In the first act, we’re introduced to the last bastion of humanity hunting down the apes, with “The Colonel” (Harrelson) on the hunt for Caesar (Serkis) himself. But Caesar’s crew cut off the attack, and send the surviving humans back, sending the message that he doesn’t want war. Just to be left alone.

But it was a tactical error because now that The Colonel knows his location, he comes back to assassinate Caesar, but instead kills Caesar’s wife and son. This sets things in motion we never saw coming. One, is to send the remaining apes to a trip to a save zone out in the desert while he goes after The Colonel, hell bent on revenge for the taking of his son’s life.

The opening act drives home the emotional capability, the family structure of the apes. It drives home in this prequel, how unlike the original films, instead of hating the apes, we feel strongly for the apes, the victim of humanity. They’re the victim of science that was applied to them by humans. They’re the victim because they’re blamed for the simian flu that wiped out most of humanity. And now they’re blamed for this “all out” war that Koba started back in the last film.
