Iron Man from 'The Avengers,' a box office reportThe second weekend being out, The Avengers is steam rolling along, with estimates looking to have the movie hit the grand total of $1 billion, worldwide at the box office by the time the weekend is over.

Awesome.  And it’s setting one record after another…

It joins Disney’s other $1 billion movies, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.066 billion), Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.044 billion) and Alice in Wonderland ($1.024 billion).

As jazzed as I am about this, I’m not amazed considering how much tickets cost.  3D tickets cost 54% more than normal and 3D IMAX/XD cost 130% more.  In my neck of the woods, only about a third of the screenings are 2D.  Hence, I’m not surprised.

This weekend alone, The Avengers made an estimated $103M, dusting the competition.

Dark Shadows pulled in just under $30M, while the other new movie in the top-10 chart was Girl Interrupted, pulling in a whopping 1.35M! Ouch.
