After having the new Batman premiere in Batman V Superman (BvS), I was surprised and found myself enjoying Ben Affleck‘s rendition of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Kudos. I also enjoyed the harsher side of Batman. Affleck has done a good enough job that he’s been tagged by DC/WB to put together the solo Batman film. He’s also been given executive producer powers on the Justice League film, so he’s obviously been given creative control over some aspects of the film.
The film, to this day, is titled The Batman. But…
Recently Affleck has been noted to say that he will not be rushed in putting together the script and that he won’t be making a sub-par Batman film. He’ll be treading in the tracks of Christopher Nolan, and seeing what Nolan did, I fully expect DC/WB to pull their creatively insecure fingers out of Ben’s work and let him do what he does best, because he does make great movies too.
What’s awesome about this project is that Affleck is co-writing the script with “the man” from DC, Geoff Johns.
But at this point in time Affleck made mention in an interview that the script is still not ready. There have been rumors that the studio was not happy with the first rendition of the script.
Fans have been told that the film will be an original story with some familiar characters and iconic bad guys. But now word on the street in various sources are saying that filming will begin in the Los Angeles region, with or without Affleck attached to the film.
Word on the street is that WB is pushing to get the Batman film out. AKA, in Affleck’s implied words, “rushed.”
And in other reports, they’re saying that the director is not committing to any real updates on the production and is making people wonder if the film will be going on without him.
If Warner Bros is pushing for some vision of theirs in this film over what Affleck has created, and Affleck is saying he won’t make something he does not like, well, I would hope that WB sits back and get their panties out of the bunch they’ve put it in.
For one, if they rush it, and say, they start filming without a solid form of a script, you might want to think back to that horrible Green Lantern film with Ryan Reynolds, which was rushed and filmed without a solid script in place at the beginning of filming.
Second, you can see what they did to let Snyder hodge podge together the Batman v Superman film, and it got trashed by real-world humans, though fans did enjoy it. But fans knew what was going on. Real-world humans were left stumped with how fragmented the film felt. Face it… the first two acts were just an introduction to the big fight at the end.
Third, after BvS, WB jumped on the reshoot bandwagon, afraid of what was said about BvS, and reshot some of Suicide Squad to make it more like the trailers that made it look exciting. This project ended up feeling fragmented, rushed and slapped together too.
Despite all the “failures” of their first few films, they’re still doing OK at the box office, but I think they could do so much better, and WB hopes they can too.
The studio currently has a release date of October 5, 2018 set for an unannounced DC Comics movie. Could this be The Batman film? Probably, but we can wait and see.
If WB wants something to have a lasting effect on the memories of fans and movie-goers alike, they need to back the fuck off and let Affleck do his thing. Even if it means pushing back whatever hoped-for release date they had in mind for the film. Nolan made them a bucket load of money with his visions and I think Affleck can do the same, if not better.
