The Cabin in the Woods - Split Up from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard

Calling all fans of the Joss Whedon produced and co-written project that is called The Cabin in the Woods, the news on the street from Deadline New York is that Lionsgate is sitting down with MGM and looking at a deal to distribute the movie.

If all goes well that means we’ll finally get to see Whedon’s production and for those not familiar with how Joss Whedon rolls, you’re finally going to get a look at how he can take a known genre and twist it up!

I’ve seen the purported script and I think, if what I saw is on the up and up, then you’re in for a real treat. All I’m gong to say is there is a reason it’s named The Cabin in the Woods and not A Cabin in the Woods. You’ll see!

The only reason we haven’t seen this movie yet is it was a slate of movies that found itself an unfortunate victim of MGM’s financial woes.

I personally blame the delay on this silly industry fervor, at the time, to make everything into 3D. It was almost ready to hit the theaters but then MGM decided to post-process the movie and have a 3D version and then the money troubles hit and the movie was filed in a dark closet somewhere with a few other projects, like the Red Dawn remake.

The Cabin in the Woods is written by both Drew Goddard & Joss Whedon, produced by Joss Whedon, with Cinematographer Peter Deming.

It stars Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams, Chris Hemsworth, Fran Kranz, Kristen Connolly, Amy Acker, Brian White and ensemble of hapless other cast members doing their parts.

Drew Goddard is best known for writing Cloverfield and has collaborated with Joss Whedon in past & present projects such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and the Buffy season 8 Motion Comic. He also has TV’s Alias and Lost on his short, yet illustrious entertainment resume.

The cinematographer, Peter Deming, amongst his 54 films worth of experience, has Lost Highway, the Scream franchise films, Mulholland Dr., The Jacket & Drag Me To Hell on his resume.

I’m sure the cast looks familiar to you also… Richard Jenkins was in Let Me In & Hall Pass; you’ve probably been watching Jesse Williams in Grey’s Anatomy, Chris Hemsworth is in some movie somewhere… oh yea, Paramount Pics Thor and the upcoming Walt Disney Studios distributed and Joss Whedon directed The Avengers movie; Fran Kranz from Whedon’s Dollhouse; Kristen Connolly from Revolutionary Road; Brian White from Men of a Certain Age & Moonlight; Amy Acker from Angel, Alias & Dollhouse.

With the potential of Lionsgate looking to distribute the movie, I’m sure this move will convert many folks into fans of the production / distribution company, and rightfully so. So this is finally the good news on the horizon that we’ve all been waiting for, where we may finally get to see Drew Goddard‘s The Cabin in the Woods.
