In case you had not heard the news, you won’t be surprised to learn that Drew Goddard‘s & Joss Whedon‘s The Cabin in the Woods movie has had it’s release date of Jan 2011 pulled.
I’m fairly frustrated for a number of reasons at this, as any Whedon or Goddard fan is right now.
First, MGM has been in financial trouble for quite some time and they’re dealing with it in the best possible fashion. Which to date, hasn’t presented itself yet in the form of a buyer who wants to step into all the debt the studio racked up.
Second, this movie would have been out already if MGM didn’t try to jump on the 3D band wagon and post-convert it. Sure, they’re trying to plump up their purse strings by making it 3D and charging 30% more, but because of that, they delayed the original air date to do it, because the idea to post-process the movie, was a post-release date decision. So now I’m post-frustrated!
What will become of the movie, has yet to be seen because the MGM slate is bigger, huge movies they need to also deal with in the form of The Hobbit and James Bond 23.
For now, we have to wait and see when/if The Cabin in the Woods will ever see the light of day. We’ll see.
