The first movie trailer for The Hunger Games is finally here!  And it’s rather fulfilling.  This trailer pretty much covers the front part of the novel/movie of the book trilogy of the same name, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins.

Katniss and Peeta character sheets from THE HUNGER GAMES

These are preview scenes leading up to and showing how Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) & Petta (Josh Hutcherson) find themselves thrust into the games.  We specifically see exactly how Katniss ends up volunteering, to take the place of her little sister, Prim.

From there, bits of the preparation for the live-televised games in Panem, and the start of the games, when all contestants in each of their tubes, is raised out into the playing field that the Capitol has set up for the Hunger Games.

Effie and Cinna from THE HUNGER GAMES movie

In the trailer we get glimpses of Katniss’s best buddy, Gale (Liam Hemsworth).  We see  Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) selecting the District 12 names at what is called The Reaping.  That’s when young citizens are selected to participate in The Hunger Games.  We also see glimpses of Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) and President Snow (Donald Sutherland).

It looks, almost exactly as I had hoped things would look, after having read The Hunger Games trilogy!

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.  A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy.  If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 16 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following.

Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES on March 23, 2012.
