The Most Disappointing Spoiler Bomb Yet from ‘Iron Man 3’

There will be Iron Man 3 spoilers included below.

You know, for all the conjecture, guessing, rumors and what not, it’s all fun and games. But when one of your suspicions comes to light and is sort of true, that’s cool too. Except one of the latest TV spots for Iron Man 3 gave away an interesting moment from the movie that could have been one hell of a surprise in the movie theater, but instead, not only spoils that moment, but destroyed the magic and mystery of the scene when it was first distributed as a promo image.

Damn you Marvel, damn you to hell. Now, where’s my movie???

Over the last few weeks the marketing machine for Iron Man 3 has been doing some serious blitzing on the public. Some of it added to the swarm of conjectures from movie sites and sites run by Iron Man fans. (life long Shellhead fan, right here!) Some of it could be considered conjecture spoilers while some, not so much. But non-fans had no other resources and hence, were exposed to it all.

Iron Patriot or War Machine in 'Iron Man 3'

Then the sporadic images started showing up from the North Carolina production (filming) site… including that one very early office building sign with A.I.M. on it. But we had not heard anything about that angle to the story. At that time. But details are starting to spill out, some of which answered that particular A.I.M. question.

Between the press being let out and the trailers, we’re seeing what looks like a lot from the movie.

But I’m also secretly hoping that what we’re seeing is barely touching the surface of what the movie is. Many movie trailers these days tend to show off scenes from the first part of a movie and the rest of the movie is left for the movie fan’s discovery. But from what we’re seeing, I’m thinking we’ve seen moments from all throughout the movie.

With that said, let’s look at some of the new details coming to light these days about Iron Man 3, starring Tony Stark… I mean Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Ben Kingsley & Don Cheadle.

MOVIE SPOILER WARNING from this point forward, as some points touch on story plot points.

Iron Man SPOILERS warning

Below is a lot of information on the part that Extremis plays in Iron Man 3 and other things.

Iron Man Extremis in 'Iron Man 3'

First up, news was that Shane Black was tapping into the Extremis chapter of the Iron Man comic franchise. That was exciting for those who read that story arc. It was a desperate Tony Stark needing to improve the reflex time of his armor, and as a side benefit, internally linked in to his equipment, wi-fi style.

Guy Pearce plays Aldrich Killian, who it turns out in this movie, is the man behind A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics {in the comics}). Having been born with disabilities, he refused to accept them, and hence, his motivation for founding A.I.M.. In IM3, A.I.M. creates Extremis. What Extremis is, is tech that “taps into human DNA and is able to reprogram it and regenerate limbs and enhance strength and cure wounds. But it also could change the whole world, which is what Killian intends to do with it.

But Killian’s issues stem from wanting to be an all-powerful entity. (Any IM fans smelling the thematic presence of MODOK in Killian?)

Of note, Maya Hansen, played by Rebecca Hall, is one of the A.I.M. minds behind the tech of Extremis.

Director Black put Extremis at the core of this story. And we know, or heavily surmise that Tony Stark has Extremis installed in his body. (In the first Extremis Motion Comic story arc, Stark, in his armor, gets his ass handed to him by a mere human on the tech. Badly beaten and near death, he submits to the tech. I’m thinking the opening moments in some movie trailers where he’s dragging his useless armor is much along those lines.)

From some scenes in the trailers, we see several men undergoing some testing or something, as they are getting strapped into some kind of equipment. I believe that’s the Extremis tech being installed in the test subjects. (Fans of the franchise know that sometimes the tech kills the test victim, so I’m not expecting all of these guys to live.)

It’s also been said that Shane Black made mention of a special effect that had not been shown in the trailers. Gee… thanks for holding out that bit for the movie fans. My guess, and

THIS COULD BE A BIG SPOILER GUESS,

is, like in the comic, the bad guy had pure energy at his disposal to unleash, much like Tony’s repulsors. That’s my guess. We’ll see.

END spoiler guess.

Way back in the early days of Iron Man 3 production, guesses were that when James Badge Dale was hired, he’d be playing Iron Patriot. But it turns out that he’s playing Eric Savin. In the Marvel comics world, Savin is a cyborg known as Coldblood, but here, he’ll be an A.I.M. henchman who uses the Extremis tech for his own designs and is a “very frightening individual.”

So the suit we see Rhodey wearing is one that Tony lets him use, while working for the U.S. Government. The Iron Patriot look is so that War Machine will look the U.S. part and not be a part of the Avengers or other vigilante like group, as his government handlers wants.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black based off of his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Stephanie Szostak, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Iron Man 3 opens in theaters on May 3, 2013. The other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies coming to “town” soon include

  • Thor: The Dark World (November 8, 2013);
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014);
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1, 2014);
  • The Avengers 2 (May 1, 2015) &
  • Ant-Man (November 6, 2015).

Let’s have some fun with trailers:

– Ah, that lesson The Mandarin talks about… sort of…

A Trailer distributed in the UK

This is that Spoiler that upset even me….

Basically, this image below, had me wondering to no end, WTH is that? A bad dream? Jarvis out of control? Did they introduce Jocasta and she’s out of control? My imagination was sparked.

And then they show this trailer below… (which of course, sparked thoughtless headlines like there’s no tomorrow. If websites cared about their readership, they might think about being more careful about their titles! But hey, that’s just me.)

So in one regard, they address “a” premise of Pepper in armor. I’m guessing it’s not her “Rescue” armor from the comic franchise, but like many Marvel movies, where they take a few details from multiple characters and wrap them up into one, I believe this might qualify!

Iron Man 3 - a movie trailer still

Here’s SPOILER FOOD for solid conjecture… is that Pepper in an Extremis rig?

Hell, I’m still waiting for them to tease us about that character death I’ve been suspecting. But I’m not going to toss those deets out there at the moment.  I’ve done enough damage here.  For you and myself!

=========

Of course the other totally shocking and could have been a blast-fun surprise, is the existence of all the armors in Iron Man 3.

In the comics, the various armors came about over the period of many years. But if you’re wondering why so many different armors… think about this:

You, the comic fan, weren’t shocked about the collective of characters and enemies in The Avengers. But if you put yourself in Tony’s shoes, in the first two movies, his enemies were human and wearing technology like his own. Or manipulating his technology.

But when he faced off against Loki and the Chitauri, he saw things he wasn’t ready for. This scientist encountered “gods,” Gamma powered hulks, space aliens, a rip in the sky for giant flying monsters to come out of and attack him.

So he had to come to any party, prepared.  And apparently since events in The Avengers, Pepper has been running the company and Tony has been tinkering in his lab.  Prolific little tinkerer he is.

But what seems to be reassuring “spin,” sources on the street say that the trailers don’t touch on the story that movie-goers will encounter in the theater. That nothing has been really given up.

And I’ve enjoyed how they’ve taken inspiration from characters and spun new angles on them in the movies.

May 3, that’s when I’ll see you in the theaters, catching Iron Man 3!

FOOTNOTE:  It’s an impressive thing to see, where Robert Downey Jr. has come from in years previous, to where he is now.  Kudos to that man.  Kudos.
