The most watched cable network out there for 2009 turned out to be the USA network. USA had an average of 3.3 million viewers. They were followed by the Disney channel with 2.5k viewers, ESPN was 3rd with 2.3 million and Fox News was the 5th most watch cable network with 2.2 million average viewers.
USA got to the 1st spot by a 15% increase of viewers from the previous year. FX had a 10% increase in viewers, giving it an average of 1.4 million viewers.
The largest percentage change of all the cable networks was the Food Network, seeing a 26% increase of viewers, or 1.1 million viewers average.
HBO had a 41% increase, thanks to True Blood and other hit shows, but that’s like Cable Cable where you need to pay even more for it, so I’m not really counting it amongst those channels we can get to a bit more readily without shelling out more bucks.
Of the networks we might care about here on Cinema Static on SoB:
Network Viewers in the millions, viewership change
- USA 3.3, +15%
- TNT 2.3, +2%
- TBS 1.8, -7%
- A&E 1.5, +8%
- FX 1.4, +10%
- Cartoon 1.3, -3%
- Syfy 1.3, 0%
- AMC 1.0, -6%
- HBO 0.7, +41%.
Despite all the hoopla that Syfy has regurgitated over the last 6 months on their Twitter account and website about all the internal network ratings records they’ve busted with their new shows, they stayed status quo with the number of viewers from the previous year.
This could mean a few things.
The first 1/2 of 2009 was so ugly that had they not changed, they might have been totally converted to a wrestling network.
The 2nd 1/2 of 200 may have been a phenom for them, but it really didn’t amount to a hill of beans.
What was that Syfy Hoopla? You’ll see in an upcoming article!

I love/hate the syfy channel. I mean what exactly does wresting have to do with syfy. Yes i get that it is all acted out and they have scriptwriters but it isn’t syfy.
While I am at it, nor is the whole ghost stuff. They have the chiller network why not use it for the ghost stuff.
I love the sci fi stuff but there seem to be more and more days when it is the ghost channel rather than the sci fi channel.
