The MOTHMAN Movie on Syfy – Surprisingly Not Bad

The weekly activity is to tune into the Syfy Channel on Saturday nights and to check out the first 15 minutes of their Syfy Original Movie, like Mothman, starring Jewel Staite.

Tonight’s TV movie on Syfy turned out to be a fun popcorn movie for a Saturday and I stuck around!

Mothman brought a plot line about a mythological legend and made a fascinating shell around the myth.  I was expecting very little but the use of the monster was minimal through the first 1/2 of the movie, relying on plot to get you through to the 2nd hour.  It carried me from point A to point B in the story convincingly enough to keep me going.

Yes, it’s a Syfy Saturday night movie.  But it was an above average TV movie for this time slot and I found it to be a pleasant experience.

When the monster showed up, the effects were minimally considerable.  That’s my nice way of saying that it didn’t suck horribly like some movies can do when they apply the same Photoshop cut-out to  multiple scenes.  Yep, we’ve seen those movies.  This wasn’t one of those.

In fact the monster, the Mothman, comes into the world via reflective surfaces.  The first time we see it, it materializes on the side of a trailer-home and I started to worry just a little bit.  But we learn about the monster, it’s victims and it’s methodology as the film proceeds.

The film developed nicely.  We learn about the characters first and the “demon” of a secret they all carry.  (Yes, it seemed way off-mark on how the group of characters decide to deal with their accident in the beginning.) We then learn about other people  and the existence of the creature itself.  We then find ourselves learning how the monster operates and the TV movie is closed out with the cast of characters dealing with their personal demons and how they draw the Mothman to themselves and how they deal with it.

To be honest, I was surprised that I enjoyed the movie tonight completely.

Cinema Static scale of 1 to 10?  Easily a 6!

This movie was great. Although I was too tired to watch the rest I knew this was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It was so much better than “Untracable”… I liked the plot, the theme, the characters, EVERYTHING. Does any body know when that’s on again…?
