The Newest Owner – Driver Performance Thoughts

Tony Stewart leads Jimmie Johnson

As it stands, Tony Stewart came away from the Dover race with the points lead.  The first time since 1992 since the much beloved Alan Kulwicki held the points lead as an owner / driver.

Now who poo-poo’d the idea of an owner driver last year when it was first announced?

I was skeptical, but I didn’t want to apply what I was seeing with Michael Waltrip’s experience.  It’s just not the same.  Or Kyle Petty.  At least in Kyle’s career, there was a year where someone else ran the shop and his statictics improved showing me he could drive a car.

Alas, wearing both hats of owner and driver just isn’t for everyone.

Right now, Tony has what hat to wear when down to a science.  Keep your focuses seperate.  I hope he can maintain that becaues whether you like him or hate him, this is a respectable performance that is coming out of this new team Stewart-Haas Racing.

Ryan Newman Stewart-Haas racingAnd my main man, Ryan Newman, has been doing well also.  I’d hate to think that Ryan’s performance sort of proves what I’ve said all along about how the No. 12 car is the bastard child in the Penske garage and only gets the left overs.

As it stands, Tony is first in the driver standings, and Ryan is 5th in points.  Awesome.  I’m going to probably have to buy diecasts now.  Crap!
