The Rocky Horror Glee Episode

The Rocky Horror Glee episode was an awesome flashback and more importantly, a tribute to the original 1975 musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  The original starred Tim Curry and became a cult midnight showing classic.  Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf were also in it and had cameo’s in tonight’s episode.

Remakes & tributes are a touchy genre in and of themselves.  If you take them too seriously, you set yourself up for some failed expectations.  Then again, sometimes remakes never quite fill that emotional corner of your mind that your memories have populated from the original, no matter what.  But the Rocky Horror Glee episode was a tribute of fun-spun songs that hit those very familiar feelings and it made for a fast and enjoyable sixty minutes of memories, populated with a wee bit of modernization that felt right on mark.  Having not seen the original in quite some time, I hit the episode in somewhat of a fresh perspective.

Additionally, I’ve never watched an episode of Glee and I’m not caught up in the story or issues with the ongoing plot if there is one.  Fox successfully pulled me in with teasers of what they were going to do and for me, a veteran of many a midnight showing from my youth, I think it paid off with no disappointment.

The rehearsal numbers, in the context of what they were, were great reminders of those days.  For the Rocky Horror fan, this was a hit as far as I’m concerned, but was it a hit with the viewers?

The early TV ratings for this Glee episode (via TV By The Numbers) showed that 11.2 million viewers tuned in at 8 pm and that number was up to 11.7 million viewers in the 8:30 hour. That’s a huge boost for the show that usually nets just under 7 million viewers.  (From the last two new episode airings.)

Oh, and I hate Sue!  Nice job Glee gang!  Thanks for the memories.

Glee showrunner Ryan Murphy is in negotiations with Fox 2000 about a possible remake of the Rocky Horror movie.  When I first heard about this a few months back I groaned and didn’t really pay any heed to it.   After seeing the Glee tribute episode, I have a wee bit more faith in the premise… just a wee bit more.  It is one thing to do a piece-meal tribute and quite another to pull together a complete remake.  We’ll see.
