This TV Review has DVR Viewer Spoilers for Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire on HBO promo art

I’m not sure what to say or where to start.  Most of this season of Boardwalk Empire,  Nucky (Steve Buscemi) has been trying to dodge legal hot water, as that pesky investigator was building her case against him.  But as usual, this series, from Terence Winter (The Sopranos) and Martin Scorsese rocked my Sunday evening once again.  How can Boardwalk Empire not rock?

Boardwalk Empire cast member Michael Shannon

But then things started falling apart for her as the Boardwalk Empire season started to mature closer to the season finale.  The creepy but focused Agent Van Alden’s (played well by Michael Shannon) life started to fall apart, from an illegitimate baby, pending divorce and then  to have his murder of his past partner come to light put him on the road and on the lamb!

Then the political underpinnings of the city were turning against Nucky until James Darmody’s (Michael Pitt) father (Dabney Coleman) died… or, well, was killed.

Plus, we had the freaky piece of information about James and his mother, played by Gretchen Mol, and their alcohol-based incest moment, had affected me for several hours after that episode.  Ick.  But it was a powerful enough scene, and done artfully well by HBO.

Boardwalk Empire - Michael Pitt as Jimmy Darmody

But then Jimmy Darmody, after the passing of his father, looked like he was coming back around to appease Nucky and started doing things for him, helping to set things right. And it seemed he wanted to.  After assuming the power his father had,

And then to have Nucky meet with Jimmy at the end of the episode, to put him down was something to see.  I was not shocked, yet did not expect that to take place.

Boardwalk Empire - Kelly Macdonald as Margaret Schroeder

But wow, did Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) just pull a serious one over on Nucky, and really just screwed him with what she did in that final scene???

Like I said, wow.

What a powerful ending…  and I was just starting to like Jimmy as he seemed to be slowly coming into his own.  I’ve loved his story from the very beginning, and had been hoping to see his character mature beyond, well, this season!

Boardwalk Empire - Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire

I think that between Steve Buscemi and Kelly Macdonald, they really make this show.  Buscemi hits it out of the park and Macdonald just does this sublime, underlying plot that makes you wonder when that viper is going to really strike, if she does indeed, become a viper!  I mean, it is about the kids first, right?  And that, I fear, will be Nucky’s undoing.
