'The Tourist' starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie

The Tourist movie review from Cinema Static on Brusimm.

The Tourist stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in a movie written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others). Other cast includes Paul Bettany (Upcoming Priest), Timothy Dalton, Rufus Sewell and other fine looking cast.

Depp plays Frank, a tourist who finds himself caught up in a rather interesting web of intrigue that Jolie (Elise) drags him into.

The movie opens with police following Elise to her morning coffee spot. She gets a note delivered by a courier. The police tailing her call their boss asking if he thinks the courier is someone they’re looking for, a one Alexander Pearce. He says he thinks everyone looks like him. They end up arresting the poor courier. The note, is for her, with instructions on how she can lose the police.

She gets on a train and starts flirting with a stranger to make the police following her think that this guy, Johnny Depp, is the guy they’re looking for.

And therein, starts all of Frank’s troubles. Women, I tell ya!

Angelina Jolie in 'The Tourist'This is not an all-out action flick. If you’re looking for an Angelina Jolie or Johnny Depp butt-kicker, this is not it. But if you’re a fan of either or both of these actors, you are in for a treat. The story is a sublimely written and filmed project where Jolie glides from scene to scene and Depp is a calmly suave Johnny. It felt like this movie was made for these two.

Jolie looked different in this movie than any other movie I’ve seen her in and it was a good look.

The action is sparse and they look to build the tension with dialog through the first 40 minutes of the film before one action scene that leads into more story development. It is a slow paced suspense thriller that Depp and Jolie deliver nicely in.

If you like a good, quality written story, this is for you. If you want more action peppered with story, you’ll think this is a flat flick.

If I were to score The Tourist, I’d give it a 7 out of 10 for the writing. (If I were interested in a more action-based flick, probably a 6.)
