The Vampire Diaries Season Finale “Founder’s Day” Review & Recap

The season finale of The Vampire Diaries really brought it to the fans like I never expected. I expected a big twist or two. But they pounded the fan with a series of surprises. Now this is how a season finale is supposed to happen! I rarely get shocked in a big way from most television shows. This one episode hit me a few times.

I have to say that I don’t think I can beat around the bush on this one and say up front that (WARNING), there will be spoilers for the time-shifted viewer… BIG SPOILERS. Proceed at your own risk.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) finally learned from Stefan (Paul Wesley) that John Gilbert (David Anders) is indeed her father. It’s also become apparent that Elena can’t quite make amends with her brother,Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), just yet. He’s still pissed. (Steven is the grandson of Steve McQueen, if you were wondering.)

One of Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) first words out of his mouth in “Founder’s Day” was pesky as he tormented Stefan, but something changed within Damon. He was fighting an inner awareness as he thanked a few folks for what they’ve done for him and Stefan. It was touching to see what looked like a Damon that was changing. (The above image from The Vampire Diaries is Damon saying thanks to Bonnie.)

John Gilbert used the device that Bonnie (Katerina Graham) pretended to nuetralize for the Salvatore brothers in the previous episode. Vampires went down all over town during the town celebratory fireworks and town Deputies were picking them up, collecting them. Oddly, others who weren’t vampires went down too. The Mayor, Richard Lockwood (Robert Pralgo) his son Tyler (Michael Trevino) both were hit by this device. It was a confusing moment because at first I thought “Holy f*!!! They’ve vamps!?”

John’s people collected all the “vampires” and placed them in the basement of an old house and lit it on fire. Damon watched helplessly as John personally staked Anna (Malese Jow) just before lighting the place up. That made me sad for Jeremy. He was connecting with her. Bonnie made things right by using magic that allowed Stefan to save Damon from the vampire-killing house fire, but she made it abundantly clear to Stefan that all is well with them because she is Elena’s best friend, but if Damon ever spilled any blood, she’d take him out.

Later, we watch Damon trying to do the right thing and see if Jeremy wanted his memories erased, but Jeremy said that he may have made him forget, but the emptiness is still there. Damon then encounters Elena and it’s here that I’m sure that says a lot to how Damon is changing when he mentions that when he first came to the town, he wanted to destroy it. But tonight, all he wanted to do was protect it.

This isn’t the end of the episode but I want to address the jaw droppers from the episode. I’ve taken a moment to warn you that if you’re a time-shifted viewer, do yourself a favor and stop reading. Honestly! Go watch the season finale of The Vampire Diaries and come back to chat with us. I think you’ll appreciate this advice or guidance.

Now, on to the dirt & massive spoilers:

1) With Damon looking to be a better man, I think his is something I think we may have all wanted to see. But if he really is turning into a better man and he loses that bad-boy image, will the female fans still be hot for him?

2) In the basement when John lights the fire, Damon and the Mayor exchange a few words… Damon expresses that he’s a vampire. Now up to this moment, I thought the Mayor was also a vampire, but he’s shocked at the idea of a vampire and freaks out. He’s not a vamp, but why did he go down earlier? You’ll see.

3) I’m still reeling from the Mayor’s situation when we get Damon and Elena kissing! I’m like whoa!!! Girl, what are you doing? (At this point, I had forgotten something I said to my wife a few weeks back. A suspicion I had about Elena, which turned out to be wrong, but yet…)

4) Goodbye John Gilbert! When Elena cut John’s ring (and all his other fingers) off and killed him, I actually wasn’t too surprised, considering how cavalier he was about killing her vamp friends, I wasn’t expecting it, but I wasn’t shocked. Then when her face changed and she vamped out, I had three things go through my head at the same instant:

  • A) OMG, Elena’s a vampire and has been hiding it all this time?
  • B) OMG, Elena IS Katherine all along! (Which was what I was pondering a few weeks back)
  • C) Holy s**! It’s Katherine!!! When did she step in or swap in for Elena?

It was a confusing moment for poor ‘ol me, but damn, now that is how you deliver a season finale for The Vampire Diaries!

I like how Bonnie looks like a power to reckon with and I’m enjoying how this character is coming into her own! With the new character traits revealed, I’m going to say that they are werewolves… and they probably didn’t know it until the magical device ripped through their heads. This means a whole new level of complexity was just added to the fray. (I looked it up folks. There are werewolves in the book series, The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith.)

I fully expect the ratigs for this episode to take off and who’s with me, in guessing that the 2nd season premiere of The Vampire Diaries will have blockbuster ratings! How can’t it with all the new plot twists?

I tend to agree with you about Damon being onto something! Alove15

Nice recap! That finale was one of the best I have ever seen. I think Katherine heard Elena telling Stefan she was going to the school to pick up clothes. Then Katherine got there first then headed to Elena’s house. After the kiss Damon had this odd look on his face and was touching his lips so I think either a) he’s suprised that the kiss happened and it seems familiar or b) he knows something isn’t right and that it might be Katherine.
