There May Be More Female Characters For ‘The Avengers 2’

Tom Hiddleston as Loki in 'The Avengers'As The Avengers surpasses the $1 Billion mark for Marvel Studios at the box office, there’s the obvious chatter about a sequel, The Avengers 2, and also some talk about adding some female characters to the lineup of the superhero ensemble.

And that makes perfect sense, considering that right after handling ensemble cast of characters in a well balanced story, Joss Whedon‘s next greatest asset is his ability to empower the female character in his stories. (To be honest, I’m not sure which is his greater talent. With him, they both go hand-in-hand.)

With that said, I saw a piece over on Inside Movies, where EW had a roundtable interview with director Whedon and the cast about the premise of adding a woman to the ensemble.

As in all conversations with Whedon, there’s always a bit of snark. But then again, that’s what I like about him. And it seemed to wear off on the cast.

On adding women, it’s noted that in The Avengers, there are two characters already instilled in the film franchise… that’s Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Marian Hill (Cobie Smulders).

And as an inside thought, I’m expecting Hill to figure a little more prominently into the next story, since the character’s history is that after at one point, she steps in as interim director when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) steps down from running S.H.I.E.L.D. but also later, ends up working closely with Tony Stark. So her future in the Marvel franchise is pretty open right now. (I semi-expect to see her in the next Iron Man possibly. Depending on where all the Marvel franchise properties are headed with their different stories.)

To be honest, I’d be surprised if we did not see a new female or two added to the character list. And not just as eye candy, since Joss makes women as more of some awesome ass-kickers, as you may have already seen in The Avengers. I was very surprised how much responsibility Whedon gave Romanof in the realm of helping stop the huge alien threat, considering this mere human was in the middle of meta-humans, demi-gods, gamma radiated powered folk and what not.

In the interview, when they asked Whedon what new character would anyone like to see in the sequel, he joked that they need more men in the ensemble.

But what female characters can they inject into the ensemble?

The Scarlet Witch (Concept Art from Kotobukiya)Well, there’s Wasp/Janet Pym who was one of the founding members of The Avengers in the comic book. The Scarlet Witch/Wanda was an early member too. If Janet shows up, would this include Hank Pym too? Or would The Vision come with Scarlet Witch?

There was Moondragon, Hellcat and also Ms. Marvel. Whom I think might be a popular addition. And there’s also Spider-Woman and She-Hulk…

I would like to see either or both Scarlet Witch and Ms. Marvel.

Ms MarvelBut if we see new characters, when will we see them? Every super-powered character in The Avengers showed up in a previous movie. We saw Hawkeye in Thor, Romanoff in Iron Man 2, and so forth.

We have a few sequels coming of each title… Captain America, Thor, and who knows, with how wonderfully Joss Whedon handled Bruce Banner/The Hulk, I think people would love to see that character, in Whedon’s vision, get another shot at a movie.

But in adding a female character, the premise of the person having her own movie first could be far-fetched. That is, if you believe major studios who say that a woman cannot headline an action movie. Seriously.

Then again, they’ve never let Whedon helm such a film. Plus, as Whedon points out in the interview,

After The Hunger Games they might stop telling you that a little bit. Whatever you think of the movie, its done a great service. And after The Avengers, I think its changing.

Right now, here are the upcoming release schedules for related movies:

  • May 3rd 2013 Iron Man 3
  • November 15th 2013 Thor 2
  • April 4th 2014 Captain America 2

So who could be added, and presumably, with Thanos in the mix in The Avengers 2, would she have mega-powers or not? Joss Whedon manages to surprise at every turn… that is, if he takes the helm of the sequel.
