A surprise yet again rolls through the box office numbers as another found-footage type movie seems to over-perform at the movie theater once again.
This last weekend, despite horrid reviews from professional critics alike, the regular movie-goer was not dissuaded and charged out to see The Devil Inside. And by so doing, put the movie at the top of the charts of the top-10 box office movies this weekend in it’s premiere weekend.
The Devil Inside pulled in an estimated $34.5M in tickets this weekend, putting this relatively unknown cast and crew at the front of the pack.
Following demon possessions were international spies on the lamb, in Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, starring Tom Cruise. Mission Impossible pulled in just over $20M in ticket sales during it’s 4th week out, bringing it’s gross up to $170M.
Also in its 4th week in movie theaters, pulling in third amongst the top-10 movies this last weekend was Robert Downey Jr., in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, pulling in $14.5M and bringing it’s gross to $157M.
The highly touted (by critics) movie, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, only pulled in around $11M. in 4th, in its third week out, bringing the overall gross to almost $77M.
Rounding out the top-5 of the top-10 movies was the squeaky animated movie Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, with $9.5M in its fourth week out, pulling the movies’ gross up to almost $112M.
Behind these top weekend performers, were War Horse ($8.6M), We Bought a Zoo ($8.5M), The Adventures of Tintin ($6.6M), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ($5.8) and New Year’s Eve ($3.3M).
