Michael Bay & company have landed Bill Fagerbakke to voice the Jimmie Johnson No. 48 Autobot in Transformers 3, (Dark of the Moon).  According to various sites, they’re surmising that the NASCAR themed* Transformers could be The Wreckers team of commandos.

The three NASCAR teams involved in Transformers 3 are the Rick Hendrick owned No. 48 Lowe’s team helmed by Jimmie Johnson, another Rick Hendrick owned team, the No. 88 AMP Energy drink Chevy, helmed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., and the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing No. 42 which is usually driven my Juan Pablo Montoya…  on the track that is. (No Dale Jr. is not part owner of the third team.  His step-mother is.  Dale Jr. owns a few tracks, a few bars, a few race teams, a real estate brokerage and such of his own, but he’s not part of the No. 42 team.)

I tried chatting the teams up about the involvement of their cars a few months back but they wanted to stay tight-lipped about the project so not much could be gleaned from that angle, but it’s great to see NASCAR getting some notoriety in a major film.

And if guesses are right, they’re good guys!  Usually the Decepticons seem to get the cool alternate mode shapes, so it’s nice to see these three possibly being good guys.

Now here’s an interesting set of photos:  Michael Bay in front of the space shuttle Discovery, but if you look closely, he’s wearing a NASCAR hat, but not from any team that’s been reported to be in Transformers 3!  Ha!  What’s that about you ask?

Take a close look at the picture below…  he’s at Charlotte Motor Speedway standing next to the Ryan Newman driven No. 39 Chevy…  (how fortuitous, my favorite driver)  If you look to the right, you see the car/toolbox for the No. 14 car.  That car is driven by Tony Stewart.  He owns his and the No. 39 team and it seems that Michael Bay may by paying quiet homage to Tony and/or his team.  Too cool:

About Bill Fagerbakke

Bill Fagerbakke

Bill Fagerbakke has recently been seen in Jennifer’s Body (which surprisingly wasn’t that bad) & Halloween II (2009) but may be more well known for his role of the not-so-bright Dauber on the TV Series Coach.

If you don’t follow animation, you may also be surprised to know he has quite the resume.  He has 28 movies/videos and 44 TV series titles under his belt.  Some of it in voice-over work in animation.  Mr. Fagerbakke has done work in the 1994 series Gargoyles (I loved that series), the 2009 Transformers: Animated series on the Cartoon Network, and more notably in the SpongeBob SquarePants TV Series.  He’s also had parts in Batman: The Brave and the Bold and can be seen intermittently in several episodes of the non-animated series, How I Met Your Mother.

2 Tidbits for the non-NASCAR fan:

Yes, NASCAR vehicles always have that many stickers / sponsors on the sheet metal.  A hood sponsor can net a team up to $10 million a year in sponsor fees alone because of the commercial exposure and the number of fans who not only see the races, but, who also tend to be one of the most brand-loyal fans in the sports entertainment industry.  Hey, you back our guy, we’ve got your back Mr. Corporate Entity.

I’ve seen a few websites refer to these potential Autobot Wreckers as “NASCARs.”  That’s like calling football teams footballs.

These three cars are independently owned business entities that compete under the sanctioned rules of NASCAR as independent contractors.  NASCAR stands for “National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.”   If you want to be a bit more accurate, I’d think you can refer to them as NASCAR themed Transformers.  But that’s just me, talkin’ like a NASCAR fan.  [That’s an inside joke with the one person who might actually see this and get that.]

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is due out in theaters July, 2011.
