TV News Bits: Smallville to Novel, Syfy Attacks Jersey Shore [Cinema Static]

Brusimm Cinema Static TV NewsToday’s pieces of TV news that caught my attention was a premise that Smallville could be getting turned into a novel to continue the series, and the other one is the blending of a reality TV show and a Syfy channel original Saturday Night movie… sort of. Read on and see what’s up!

Right now the word on the street is that Smallville will be continuing, but not as we would hope!

Sure, folks were disgruntled about not seeing Clark Kent as THE Superman, in the tights. But the rights for the character and how and where he appears is a huge legal issue, and considering how many parties have say over the image rights of the character, it’s a sad and nutty affair. (And I don’t have the time to go on and on about that bit… today.)

But I was impressed they were allowed to show what they did show, and it was at least nice that it did happen. (Face it, the rights holders could have put their foot down pretty solid and never let that scene have happened.)

But onward… to the idea that Smallville may continue, but in the format of a novel, written by Smallville writer Bryan Q. Miller.

Novels and graphic novels have been very popular venues for continuing franchises. Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Firefly are still going strong, thanks to Joss Whedon keeping the franchises alive. Plus, in these venues, the special effects are cheap to produce!

For now, this is what appears to be an inside hunch from Rich Johnston, from Bleeding Cool. I hope he has good sources. Though limited in breadth, it would be cool to pay homage to the fans of Smallville by cranking out a novel that continues the story of Clark and the gang now that he’s donned the red and blue ensemble.

Syfy Channel Attacks Jersey Shore with Sharks!

Yep, I couldn’t resist that one, but the Syfy channel is tackling the realm of Jersey Shore, but not quite like what you might think. Syfy will be launching a movie only Syfy can do, called Jersey Shore Shark Attack!

But don’t get all wound up in a bunch, because the title is mostly all that will pair up with the reality TV series of a similar name…

Unless you count Vinny Guadagnino that is!

The movie is coming out in the summer or 2012 and it is going to be geared to make you think twice about that July 4th beach swim!

Check out the cast:

the Saturday Original Movie Jersey Shore Shark Attack will have an all-star cast led by Tony Sirico (The Sopranos), Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), Jack Scalia (Dallas), Joey Fatone (N Sync), William Atherton (Die Hard) — and Jersey Shores Vinny Guadagnino.

Jersey Shore Shark Attack unfolds during the July Fourth weekend at where else? — the Jersey Shore, where rare swarms of sharks are converging due to illegal underwater drilling. Now the angry sharks are on a rampage, devouring residents, and leaving it up to the locals to try and save the day.

I did a bit of digging… the movie will be directed by John Shepphird (Chupacabra Terror, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus) off a screenplay by Richard Gnolfo (A Nanny for Christmas, 12 Wishes of Christmas, Monster Ark) & Michael Ciminera (A Nanny for Christmas, 12 Wishes of Christmas).

I see some slight potential there gang… can’t wait to see what happens with this one!
