I had heard that they were going to be injecting flashbacks in the series to fill in details, but I had made a presumption that they would be more frequent than they have been… but tonight’s episode, they may be making up for it!

IN A FLASHBACK SEQUENCE, STEFAN REVEALS THE SALVATORE FAMILY HISTORY TO ELENA — Elena (Nina Dobrev) demands that Stefan (Paul Wesley) explain the frightening events that have been happening in Mystic Falls. In flashbacks, Stefan explains how his rivalry with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) began.
Back in the present, Damon impulsively takes control of Vicki’s (Kayla Ewell) future, and a confused and frightened Vicki runs away. Finally, Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) and Mayor Lockwood (guest star Rob Pralgo) take steps to protect the town. Steven R. McQueen and Zach Roerig also star. Marcos Siega directed the episode written by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec (#105).
