Steve Waid was just on SIRIUS Satellite and offered the following tidbits on the scenario:
NASCAR Scene merged into NASCAR Illustrated. (So Illustrated cut the staff? I didn’t catch any details on that.)
SceneDaily.com will continue in some form.
NASCAR Illustrated will be more of a lifestyle type publication as most NASCAR news is available immediately after a race and makes some forms of news rather obsolete.
Scene staff knew that money was short and this wasn’t a total surprise to them.
The free information (Ahem, the Citizen Journalists) that was out there hurt the publication industry.
I hate it that this is the case. Do you know why I started this site? To get better at writing. To maybe get a job as a writer. With that in mind, I hone my shoddy talent of writing into something better than what it was… and wow, it was rather frightening. (Hmm, like it isn’t much better right now!)
But now we have 30 people on the “street.”
NASCAR made the right move acknowledging the Citizen Journalists into their ranks… from their end of things, but this is what it is as times move forward and technology makes the regular guy another guy YOU, the reader, might enjoy reading.
