War of the Dead is a World War II zombie movie, and sure, it’s another zombie movie. And to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from it. But I dutifully cranked it up , thinking it would be on in the background while I do other things.

But the story was good enough to have sucked my in and the filming of the project was pretty decent, hence, and I got nothing done while it was playing.

The story goes that in the beginning of World War II in 1939, the Nazis were working on an anti-death project in a secret bunker near the border of Russia and Finland. It was later destroyed and the test subjects were buried in mass graves nearby.

In 1941 a joint military U.S./Finland team went into the same area looking to fully destroy this experimental bunker. But as they come into the area, a dog finds a spare arm in the mud of the wreckage. The dog bites a soldier and things start up from there, as the team finds the original bunker a bit later.

As the more concise film summary goes: “A platoon of American and Finnish soldiers is driven deep into a Russian forest where its Captain discovers a terrifying secret.”

To be honest, I was surprised as the story focuses on a few soldiers caught in the aftermath of this experiment as they struggle to deal with this odd enemy that won’t die.

A few things of note: These not-dead soldiers move fast and aren’t stupid. They can figure out some clearly rudimentary tactics that make it tough for our heroes to make it out easily. And it takes a while before our guys realize a shot in the head ends the problem.

Interspersed in the action is an actual story that moves along with the plot, so this isn’t just an all-out action fest. And if I’m not mistaken, I don’t think I ever heard the word zombie in the movie.

Even though the average user score on IMDb is at a 4.0, I think that’s a bit too low of a score for this movie.

At one point, I was directly taken back to a movie I like, Dog Soldiers, while watching War of the Dead. This movie totally blows any Syfy movie out of the water, if you’re looking for something to compare it to.

The cast also pulled off this story to the point of not being a distraction, like some movies can be. It stars Andrew Tiernan (Mr. Nice, 300, The Pianist), Mikko Leppilampi, Jouko Ahola, Samuli Vauramo (H+), Andreas Wilson, Mark Wingett (Snow White and the Huntsman, Intruders), and Antti Reini.

It’s directed by documentary director Mark Makilasko.

I think it blends the WWII and zombie genres rather nicely!
