Movie Reviews for Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night

I wasn’t sure which movie to go see on Friday, Conan the Barbarian or Fright Night, and thought I’d wait for the reviews to start hitting to make my decision. I was expected to have an easy call, but it looks like we’re getting 3D shoved down our throats on this one. See what’s up…

Remember way back when it was announced that Jason Momoa landed the role of Conan? Stargate fans the world wide were jazzed for him. And now, we had something to look forward to.

Conan the Barbarian Early Movie Reviews

With Marcus Nispel directing, the man who seems to have a poor rep for remakes and another rep for an overt amount of gore, and apparently he did not disappoint.

The movie has been called vision-less, bland/generic with no or little humor, with no real motivation except for a man with sword beheading many characters hunting down the murderer of his father.

LA Times said if you like gory, and don’t expect much, you’ll enjoy yourself.

It’s said this is not a remake, but a relaunch.

Pretty much reviews are down the middle… meaning of their review scales.

Rotten Tomatoes critics give it a 25%. (After adding my requisite 25% to the RT score, I’m still not seeing good things.)

Fright Night Early Movie Reviews

Colin Farrell in FRIGHT NIGHT

Fright Night early reviews, on the other hand, are complete polar opposite of Conan reviews. Remember way back, there were some early public screenings and the word of mouth from that event was pretty positive.

Now reviewers are echoing those sentiments and calling Fright Night fun. Well, most are.

ScreenCrave gives it a 4.5 / 10, saying many points don’t work for them.

But others say the pace is intense, though it’s said there is no reason for the movie to be in 3D.

Rotten Tomatoe critics give it a 78%.

But Will the 3D Blight Ruin Our Weekend Hopes?

The only disappointment, for me, is that the 3D version of both movies is being pushed. My local theaters isn’t showing the 2D version of Fright Night until 3:40pm. That bites, and that’s not a pun. That’s 4 hours later than movies usually start playing on Fridays or any day on the weekend. The same can be said for Conan the Barbarian. It looks like 3d is either going to be pushed on me, or I either find a different theater or go home and take a much needed nap!

In fact, all weekend, while the 3D versions of either movie are screening 5 and 6 times a day, the 2D versions are only getting 2 showings a day. Wow, nothing like being forced into a 3D screening. I guess I play article catch-up over the weekend!
