Who Is “Puddles Pity Party”

So there I was watching AGT (America’s Got Talent) and during one of the audition nights, this hokey looking act came out. A clown in white-face, carrying a briefcase, and looking quite sad. And not talking. He was Puddles Pity Party.

My first impression was, oh my, what shtick is this guy bringing now?

The judges questioned Puddles for a few moments, but he does not talk. Great, a mime clown. So they decided to let him do his thing. And OMG, it made the audience and the judges drop their jaws. It was amazing.

In his first round of auditions, he belted out Sia’s “Chandelier” and he did awesome. He belted it out of the park to the point that even Simon Cowell was grinning and gave him a standing ovation.

The second round of auditions, where we had a guest judge, Puddles came out and just blew the audience away with “All By Myself.”

But alas, he did not get past the quarterfinal cuts of AGT, and the suspicion was that because Simon exed him, the voting home audience crowd seemingly followed suite. But the song he did, “Royals,” by Lorde, has over 21 million views on his channel.

The thing is that as soon as he starts singing, it’s obvious he has some lungs. Then he also picked songs that demonstrates his range, slowly, but surely, each new moment shows just how deep, resonating and emotionally charged his talent can be.

It’s amazing and I love watching his auditions. It gives one chills to watch him belt it out.

And because of his auditions, I learned he has a YouTube channel where he produces a new cover song video on Tuesdays and Fridays.

But who is this amazing singer behind this facade of the quiet, singing clown?

His real name is Mike Geier, he stands at 6’8″ and at the time of this piece, he’s 52 years old. Though I never heard of him or his act before his appearance on AGT, it seems he’s been doing this for quite some time.

He’s been active within this particular clown venue for a while now and he’s also got a show that some say is to die for… Big Mike Geier, his thirteen piece Kingsized Rock ‘n’Roll Orchestra, and the sexy Dames Aflame Showgirls.

The man is married to Shannon Newton, occassionally composes stuff for Adult Swim, and here’s his bio from his own website:

“Hi, I’m Big Mike. I’m a singer, musician, an actor, announcer and a pretty good cook. I was born in Philadelphia and raised in Richmond, Virginia. I am the fifth of seven children. My dad, Big Oz, was a big music fan and a lover of Manhattans and Martinis. And the apple don’t fall far from the tree. My mom, Peg, loves to sing although she is a bit shy about it. I got the singing gene from her I guess. I grew up in a houseful of giants, with my 2 brothers and 4 sisters, all of whom grew to at least 6 feet tall. I’m the tallest of them all at 6’8”, and I became affectionately known as Big Mike.

My entertainment career began in the early 1990’s as I fronted the Swing Noir band The Useless Playboys. We toured all over the place and I have stories that will curl your toes if you’re interested. In 1995, I moved to Atlanta and started a band called Kingsized. We do pretty well. Travel a little and rock a lot.

I’ve been in a few movies, some theater, some television and many music concerts. I’ve sung with some big time acts and some small time acts.

I’m always looking forward to my next adventure. Let’s go!”

That’s about it… what else is there to know? Well, one more thing is that he treats his two personalities as if they are different people. If you ask him about Puddles, he say something like, “Well, he is…. ” or “I imagine he likes that…” he keeps his personas very separate.

Me? I look forward to his, I’m sorry, Puddle’s original spins on various songs that he does twice a week.
