Who Was David Gibbs from “The Biggest Loser?”

The Biggest LoserDuring the closing credits for Tuesday’s episode of The Biggest Loser, (2-18-13), they posted a homage stating, In Memory of David Gibbs. David was an entertainment helicopter pilot who worked for the company that created the series.

If you did not hear the news, last week a helicopter crashed out in Acton, California, while on assignment for a new reality TV series. Three people were killed in the crash and David Gibbs was one of the victims. Darren Arthur Rydstrom, 46, of Whittier, Calif., and Michael William Donatelli, 45, of Indiana, Pa were the others.

David Gibbs was a resident of Valencia, CA., and was working for The Discovery Channel production company, Eyeworks USA. (They created The Biggest Loser series.)

Per his IMDb resume, David Gene Gibbs had flown helicopters for The Amazing Race from 2007 to 2010. He was a helicopter pilot for a few movies (Jackass 3D & aerial coordinator for Star Trek: Insurrection), is credited for stunts in Reno 911!: Miami & Blow.

When folks take on specific kinds of jobs, there are more inherent risks with some jobs than others. Sitting in an office is not as dangerous as piloting an aircraft for one’s livelihood. It’s a special kind of person who can make a career out of something so unique as being a pilot of any kind of aircraft for any industry, regardless of what it is. Going up into the air has its inherent risks, that are usually minimized with rote safety routines that pilots conduct every time, before they step into the cockpit. (My father flew aircraft for a few production studios some years ago, so I’m very familiar with what a seasoned pilot does to make sure their bird is flight worthy.)

Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this fatal accident and it seems shameful that it was for a reality TV series to boot.
