In the upcoming movie, The Hunger Games, Woody Harrelson will be playing Haymitch Abernathy.

Fans of The Hunger Games books recognize this character as the guide or spokesman, so to speak, of District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.

Haymitch is the jaded past champion of the games. As a past champion, he’s required to fulfill his duties to the games. But he’s also a jaded drunk who does not instill too much confidence that he can muster up the skills to rally sponsors behind his tributes.

But Woody Harrelson, who is playing the character, he tells the LA Times that despite the character’s obvious burnt out traits, he’s been taking the direction of a humorous overtone when ever he can.

He added in his chat with the LA Times that,

“I tried to take a certain comedic aspect and give a sense, through that, that he’s been through a lot and is anesthetizing himself as a result of that.”

He says that though he’s playing an alcoholic, he tried to mix up his appearance so if anyone had certain expectations of what a drunk might look like, it wasn’t going to be exactly as fans would expect.

Harrelson also touched on the tone of The Hunger Games. He pointed out that “The essence of the book will be in the film.”

I think, well, no, hope that we get the same dark and desperate tone readers took away from The Hunger Games book series.

My first impression is who better to play the drunken disillusioned character of Haymitch than Woody Harrelson. I’m expecting great things from Harrelson for this role.

The Hunger Games comes out in March of 2012 and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne and Joshua Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, all characters from district 12 of Panem.
